    Blackened October/November Deals

Hard drives have been few and far between and of course that's what I was looking for this year. 😟 I could build a really reasonable new system for the CPU/RAM/SSD, but the uncertainty over future upgrades creates a pause. When do we know if AM5 has a future? I would not want to buy Ryzen 4th...

Fast Public Transit for North America

The first question I would have is how many riders would be needed to make that practical. For example, the corpoprate travel site wanted me to take a train between two cities on a business trip. The problem is that the places I needed to meet the train at both ends were not near my departure...

SSDs - State of the Product?

It may sound strange but that ssd was over $600 in 2018. According to the a crystal's dicmark it is still worth 98%.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Some hijinks with the forum as usual. I was able to get good contact with an intermediate pad and some Thermaltaco compound. I filled about half if the ssd and it is warmly cementing the heat. The crystal indicated 47C at peak.

SSDs - State of the Product?

The pads are like 1mm or so. If there is <1mm of goop is that better or worse than 1mm of pad? I know that anything will be better than AIR that is there now.

SSDs - State of the Product?

The 2TB M.2 is working, but the heatpad thing disintegrated. I tried one of those blue pads, but it is not the right size. Can I put compound on it to fill the gap or is that not stable?

SSDs - State of the Product?

The key fob set is a lot more expensive than a 2TB SSD, so I would be avoiding any regular washing. 😂

SSDs - State of the Product?

Why would you wash it with regularity, some kind of superstition? I would be concerned about how the proximity is affected if it is wet. Does the door unlock and lights come on at the normal distance? I mostly only have an SSD in my pants south of the equator. After 28 hours and masking I was...

SSDs - State of the Product?

This is an 860 EVO 2TB M.2 drive in a USB-C enclosure that is no longer available. 😡 I put the SSD and circuit board into the desiccator with Co indicating silica gel. I don't have molecular sieves or P2O5 handy.

    Something Random

I saw the Guardians of Galaxies Phase III and it was by far worse than the others. It's more of a kid's movie than the first one which was decent for adults. The second version was weaker, but palatable. The third had such a disgustingly mawking ending I wish the other teams had won the...

    Mirrorless Cameras (MILC) and Lenses

One of the issues with a camera is the versatility and the S*ny 1st gen GS is not giving that with its low resolution, higher noise and 250 base ISO. I just don't see Canon doing with the R1 since it is reportedly coming out early next year. Maybe they will have an R3 II targeted for the...

    Electric Van

I saw a few analog controls in the 20th century that used half degree increments. It's just a matter of the mechanical design and scale, but you don't lose any accuracy or precision. OTOH, I've seen some cheap °C/°F thermometers that calculate internally in 0.1 °C increments and map the values...

    Mirrorless Cameras (MILC) and Lenses

I've only drabbled in EMount, but 10K in it's not solving some basic issues of humanity. S*NY has a bunch of weird stuff and no teles to speak of. They never had much of a flash system. Nikon was best for that decades ago, but have completely lost interest. Nissin has a deal for all their...

    Mirrorless Cameras (MILC) and Lenses

It is good for certain action purposes, but ES is always a little bit noisier than a mechanical shuttered body and this GS seems worse. I'd like to see Claff's analysis when the camera is released. Extra noise is not going to fly so well at higher than 24 MP. A ~3ms scan time has been fine...

There is room for charging stations somewhere. If there are not many, that means they are not practically needed or economical.

    Electric Van

You are joking, but the issue is that about 1.8kw is the most that will be charged from 120V, so maybe 12-20KWh a night with losses. That's assuming you don't go out partying or on a road trip. Level 1 charging is more practical with the pluggable hybirds.

    Electric Van

You could rent a house. It seems to me that there are plenty of old gas stations that could be converted to electric. Self-service with CC only would satisfy most user needs. Are there statutes in your state that prohibit chargers?

I think that must be just the super-fast L3 chargers. There are plenty of the slower ones of varying speeds. IL is a relatively low population state state outside of the Chicago area.

EV batteries are usually warranted for 8 years or 100K miles, though they will have reduced range near the end. It is a legitimate issue but not the end of the EV world. Billions are being spend on improving rechargeable battery life and capacity. I'm inclined to get a pluggable hybrid next...

The canoo is vorpware at this point. It weighs about half as much and has about half of the payload. It depends on the needs I suppose, but Amazon surely is getting a discount on the 100K units. Maybe they will buy some of the Canoos also.

    Ryzen

The cost is practically irrelevant for individual systems. I suppose it matters for major manufacturers or those small builders making a few dozen at a time. If the next gen arrives in 2024 and is much better then it's a moot point.

Is there some reason to use the slower X3D CPU that has the mainboard problems at full power or is it just for video games? I saw the 7950X3D was coming out, but rejected it in favor of the regular 7950X with the higher power drain.

Liquid cooling might be too noisy since the rad fans face upwards and the tower case is under a table right next to me. Fans exhausting out the rear are far more muffled and further away, near the wall. The key is what amount of power is used at low load, like 20-25% and if that is low enough...

I have two X570 (one was top of the line and one was lesser), but don't recall any particular USB issues. The X670E board I have for the 7950x is more of the mid-grade variety, but still over $500 is not exactly cheap. Somehow I assumed the main USB were from the chipset for years now. My...

The performance of the 3950x was underwhelming on the lower cores. To some degree the 5950x was a mitigation of the suffering, but another $800 just 16+ months later. I stayed with the Rhizomes for 7950x so that I would not have to reinvent Windows. I have no idea when there will be better...
