Why was the site down today?

For the last two days the site has been agonizingly slow to load. Anybody else having any problems? Also, the smilely faces keep changing in the window to the right of the reply window, each time I open the reply page. Strange. Bozo :joker:

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

What the Slashdot article failed to mention is that the EPA is making the power plants clean the mercury out. And new legislation will reduce it even further. But, the number of CFLs ending up in landfils will slowly raise over the next few years. It is a no win situation. We will be breathing...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

:joker: I switched too. But there is always a trade off. The mercury in one CFL can contaminate 1000 gallons of water? Can the mercury be removed from the water, and at what cost? Does the mercury get into the fish? Sometimes we have to look past our noses at the big picture. Bozo

Vista UAC can easily be turned off with msconfig. Hibernate is a real resource hog. It is constantly writting to the hard drive. I also have BeOS. I remember bringing it to work and installing it on a PII-300 with 128M RAM. I ran the tea pot demo in a window and you could drag the window around the desktop and the tea pot never stuttered. It just kept running in the window as smooth as silk. The Linux and Windows guys...

    cheap raid storage

If you want to put 8 hard drives in a RAID 5 setup. you are going to need an expensive RAID controller. Most of the cheap software RAID controllers only do 2 to 4 drives. I don't believ any motherboard RAID controllers can do more than 4 either. But maybe someone else here has a better answer...

Because that is what I have and can recommend from experiance. If I were buying a CPU now, I would take a serious look at the E8200. My motherboard/cpu combo with an Antec Earthwatts power supply has shown a noticable drop in the electric bill over my P4. And, it is running F@H 24/7. My...

Low cost / High performance build suggestions

I'd recommend a Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 at 2.3GHz. I have mine running at 3.3GHZ with stock cooling and voltage settings. The Kingston KVR800D2K2 / 2G RAM runs fine in this setup. The motherboard has RAID 1 and the Gb ethernet. Bozo :joker:

Office computers - dual core these days?

That is about the same as our corp junkers. They are dog slow. Having Word or Excel and IE open, there are times when you have to wait for things to happen. Yes. I have a small fan that circulates air through my office to the rest of the basement. (The fan is turned off in the winter.) That way it circulates through the de-humidifier. The P4s kept the room at ~70F. The basement temperature remains at ~60F year-round. Bozo :joker:

What I miss about the Intel P4...

Actually, the P4s kept the room at ~80F even in the winter. The room is 12' x 14' in the basement with no other heat. A space heater would be nice though. I might have to buy one now. The room is only ~60F Bozo :joker:
