NEWZ: Potential LCD, CRT Display Killer Technology

Because you'll be sitting too close to the thing, you'll need a cranial implant for ADPPVC (Additional Direct Processing by Primary Visual Cortex). Your eyes alone won't be able to handle it and will need to be supplanted by a cranial interconnect a la The Borg. This will also prevent you from...

NEWZ: Potential LCD, CRT Display Killer Technology

I'm pretty sure they'll make small ones - they'd be stupid not to. After skimming the market for expensive large screens, of course. All of LCD monitors' problems solved in one stroke. At the very least, those in the graphics business will make a nice market for them. That's not to say that our...

Coug, I guess I didn't say it like I intended to. I'm grateful to you for your suggestions, and did check out the Asus ATI-based board. But I feel one of the DFIs or MSIs suit my needs better. My post certainly wasn't meant to disparage you. I'm only concerned my skills are nowhere near yours or...

    Boring bits

In my other "building a new PC" thread, I had listed an Asus board I was considering (recommended by Coug). After visiting Asus' support forum - on their site - and seeing the comments about various boards, I'm going to say no thank you. Reading reviews on hw sites about other brands, I've...

    Notebook RAM

Are you sure your notebook is using DDR2? It's probably DDR (1). IIRC the physical slot is different for DDR(1) and DDR2. Instead of relying on Sandra, I suggest you look in the user manual; most certainly the spec page will tell you the kind of RAM it uses, and most manuals have a section that...

I know this is blasphemy: but could Gigabyte be losing their touch on quality? I bought a new GB video card, retail, from a respectable vendor (Zipzoomfly) and it died in under 2 months. I drove it over to their U.S. office (they're ~ 20 miles away) and I haven't heard from them in over 20...

Sorry Merc, didn't answer your question WRT to NVidia/Via. The honest answer is I don't know. Musings on a new PC

Thanks, Coug. I took a detaild look at the Opt-165, but it'll need extensive overclocking to get near 2.6 GHz (44%). I'm not comfy with that much; I'd be pushing many crucial parts to their limits, and what I'll save on CPU cost I'll end up spending on super-fast RAM. That's why I'm targeting a...

On a tangential note: The more recent A64 chips run all 4 sticks at DDR-400; the memory controllers in older generation chips throttled down to DDR-333 if 4 sticks were used. Some motherboard manufacturers are very upfront on the product page about both the speed and the max-RAM issue (notably...
