I considered that, Tannin. Coping with this issue and reinstalling Office 2000 is like being stuck between a rock and a hard place. Other than this one problem, Office 2003 had a lot of subtle improvements I like.

Aah, Fushigi, I think you hit the nail on the head. IIRC, previous versions created the temp file in C:\Docs&Settings...., but this one creates it in the same folder that the original is in. Opening the file read-only does not modify the folder date, so that's good. I guess I'll have to use this...
