    Android phones: Tips, tricks?

It's essentially a Sprint phone that would be locked to Sprint's CDMA network. You could presumably take it to Virgin or Cricket.

Win 7 Home: premium vs Basic

I have an X100. It's not quite the same thing as a netbook, though mostly in ways that skirt the edges of technical definitions. Mine shipped with Windows 7 Professional and 4GB RAM for example, and neither of those things are what Microsoft and Intel say Netbooks are supposed to be like, and as...

    Opti-UPS?

Anyone ever bought or used an Opti-UPS TS2250B? That's a huge battery for the price, but I haven't used or run across an Opti-UPS in at least a decade.

Win 7 Home: premium vs Basic

Actually, to the best of my knowledge, no one I know who bought a netbook three years ago is still using it. I don't think the problem is unique to MSI.

On the other hand, a nubile 18 year old girl telling me how wonderful a razor is would be just fine.

    iPhone syndrome

Republic Wireless offers $20/month "unlimited everything" service with purchase of their phone and the catch that they expect you to use 802.11 as much as humanly possible. And yes, they use Sprint's network.

Thailand Flooding Threatens Hard Drive Supply

Sometime in the next month I should be retiring around 60 1TB drives. Given the number of power on hours they have, I was thinking I'd use them for non-critical functions but at this point I bet they'd fetch a ridiculous price on Ebay.

Shaving solutions, or, what do Gilette and all those companies do with all their $?

Supposedly, one of the contributing factors to blade wear is oxidation. Immersion in an anaerobic environment would indeed help with that. Makes sense to me.

Win 7 Home: premium vs Basic

I bought quite a few MSI U100s when those were the new thing. They have a cheap feel but they distinguished themselves by offering 3, 6 or 9-cell battery options at the same price. The original U100 could also run be made into a Hackintosh with ridiculous ease. That said, I don't think anyone I...

Win 7 Home: premium vs Basic

I've encountered both in the wild. Usually on Netbooks that were purchased in South America. It should be pointed out that you can always do an Anytime Upgrade to move to a less retarded version of Windows later on. Anytime Upgrades are completely painless. I'm not sure there's even any change...

Win 7 Home: premium vs Basic

IIRC, you're confusing Windows 7 Starter Edition with Home Basic. Home Basic is in fact sold in the USA on some netbook systems. Big issues: Limited support for RAM (2GB) and multitasking. Issues that will actually make people want to upgrade: Users cannot change the default wallpaper.

problem Seagate GoFlex 4TB USB 3.0

The GoFlex line is extra-special problematic. I'm not even attempting hyperbole. They're terrible. I'm thinking it's because they have an extremely poor quality power supply or transformer or something but they break. A lot.

    Lenovo G560 $288 + tax @ Fry's Electronics

I'd sort an Ideapad into the same category as a Dell Inspiron or something Asus branded. It's a big step up from Acer or HP consumer garbage but at the same time it's still a consumer notebook that only cost $300. Though Coug is right about the hard drive situation.

Yeah. I have a completely different setup for the porn machines. Actually the reason that machine doesn't go down very often is that it's where the overflow disk space for my file servers lives. I really need to get the 32TB system up and running.

PC Gaming = World of Suck

FPS gaming was basically perfected with UT2003 and Quake 3. Everything since then has just been a failure to live up to those ideals. There is a shooter game I'd like to see, called Six Days in Fallujah. It's based on real events that occurred during the most recent war in Iraq and from what...

    Large-scale water cooling (heat transfer)

I'm pretty sure there are easier ways to make stuff warm. That sounds like a bunch of points of failure and I'm somewhat doubtful that it will help that much to actually keep your bedroom warm since heat will be lost through the whole system before it gets where you want it

I shave in the shower also. I'm fortunate that my facial hair is generally fine. The hairs on my neck are horrid, and I tend to break out if I shave my neck every day. Going every other day day, shaving in a hot shower and then rinsing my face with the coldest water I can get out of the tap...

Go look at what Virgin or Cricket are offering. I believe they're both pay as you go and reselling Sprint, but last time I looked, they're the cheapest way to get a smartphone and a data plan without getting in on something like the deal I have.
