One of my clients is a starting YouTuber. Managing their social media has been fun. We collaborate on her talking points and scripts, review and manage viewer engagement. They shoot the video and I do all the editing, production, uploading etc. 3x 20 minute videos and 4x shorts per week...

SSDs - State of the Product?

While scrolling through the news, waiting for the diagnostics on my workstation to complete, I discover an article talking about Samsung 980 Pro (particularly the 2TB variant) failing early. I was running diagnostics because my computer will no longer boot. It'll POST just fine, but once it...

For my purposes I consider Proxmox a direct replacement for ESXi with fewer paywalled features. I was able to get a multi-site cluster going within an hour, and migrate VMs across easily. There were some moments of frustration, mainly because I knew all I needed to know about ESXi and having to...

I just got my first Proxmox server running a couple weeks ago. Running Home Assistant and Docker (and Docker is being managed by Portainer). Pretty happy with the setup so far. Server is just one of those cheap low-powered units with a bunch of ethernet ports sold on Amazon as routers.

    Samsung 990 Pro

My understanding is that if you want low latency and built like a tank, the (now old and retired) Intel Optane drives are still hard to beat. Their capacity sucks though.

Nope, my mistake for not reading your question well enough. That card does need 16x and gives 4x 4x. Please disregard. It will work in non-ASUS boards though; I ran one in a supermicro for a while.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Merc probably knows things I don't, but the concern as I understand it is about the arrays ability to rebuild in a reasonable amount of time after a failure, and the likelihood of another failure before that rebuild has completed. This is why I've been using fast drives if I need a larger...

Heat management: Water Cooling in an Apartment?

The radiator might have fans, or it could just be huge and passive (I have the whole size of the door for it). There really isn't a place outside the office to put the computer; it is at the end of a hallway. My monitor currently runs 4k@144hz HDR, and it is difficult to get that signal stable...

I'm on the other side of Denmark in a city called Horsens, but the country is small enough that it is a 2.5 hour drive. Heat management: Water Cooling in an Apartment?

The reason for water cooling is specifically to move the heat outside the room. I'm sorry I wasn't clear in the initial post. The PC is next to my desk, and the water blocks capture the heat from the main components. That loop then leaves the pc case, travels along the wall, onto the door next...

Heat management: Water Cooling in an Apartment?

The 4090 and i9-13900KF have both been well documented to get most of their performance with less than half of the power consumption. I might just have to turn it down. That said, getting the heat out of this small room and into the larger hall/living space would at least slow down the process.

Heat management: Water Cooling in an Apartment?

For the first time in nearly a decade I have a home office. It isn't big, but is a big step up from my corner of the bedroom in California. It is also incredibly well insulated. So much so that even in the middle of winter my PC drives the room temp beyond 30C quite quickly when gaming. I...

    Mirrorless Cameras (MILC) and Lenses

I agree, and that is why I have a wall of lenses for my 7DII, but the amount of content I see that is now just cell phones leads me to believe most people aren't bothering to learn photography or color science at all. Honestly the poor audio gets me more than the botched exposure.

Learning to be comfortable alone totally sucks. Especially if (like me) you're the type to review your choices and let any sub-optimal play fester. Mirrorless Cameras (MILC) and Lenses

I think the market for low-end (<$3k) cameras is disappearing quickly. As smartphones get better, there is less reason to get a cheap mirrorless or DSLR. And as the low end market shrinks, there is less reason for companies to R&D in that space, which means the cell phone manufacturers' massive...

Now that there basically isn't a waiting list, resale values are coming down considerably. The model I'm looking at retailed for $85k 3 years ago and is now basically 70% of that. Seems roughly in line with other luxury vehicles. And I know that Tesla's feature set leads to more attention for...
