hello!

I bought 3 300GB ultra 320 80 pin Fijitsu 10K drives.
I need to figure out a way to connect them to my Intel STL2 server board with dual 1GHz Pentuim 3s & 4GB of ECC REG memory. This will be a file server for the whole house and will be probably running Ubuntu (unless any one wants to recomment anything else).

I am an old timer with PCs, but VERY new to SCSI.

What I want to do:

1) Have a smaller U160 drive connected to the u160 onboard scsi - this is will be the OS drive.

2) Buy: (help me chose! - enumerate the choices 1-5 best to worst - or add an idea of your own)

a. Adaptec 39320A
b. Adaptec ASC- 39320
c. LSI Logic LSI22320RB-F
d. LSI Ultra 320 PCI Mega-Raid 518 ( Model# PCBX518-B1 )
e. LSI Logic 21320 LSI21320-R

3) Have 3 300GB drive Daisy-chaned together to form 900GB - NO RAID yet because I dont care for much redundency for now - its a home system anyway!

4) Will need terminator at the end of the dasy-chain.

6) I want to make a rackmount scsi enclosure for the drives - hot-sawp would be awsome but I will need to wait unless its affordable

6) will connect the server to the world with one pcix gigabit controller or two bonded gigabit PCIX controllers.

QUESTIONS:

1) What cables are compatible with Ultra 320 standard? Please list the acronyms. I want to be able to take advantage of the full speed. For example are they compatible with Ultra 160? Ultra3, ultra II?

2) Are 80pin to 68pin adaptors all the same (i know 80 pin is essentialy 68+power)? Can I buy a U160 adaptor and expect it to work on U320?

3) Are all 68 pin terminators compatible with u320? Can I buy a u160 terminator and expect it to work with u320?

4) What terminator type (active, passive, etc...) is best for my application?

5) How easy can I make a SCSI enclosure from a 4U rackmount case? Will it be just power supply + my drives + terminator + cables = DONE? Is there some extra hardware that I am not sure of?

NOTE: I know nothing more about SCSI the what I have posted on this thread.

Thank you in advance,

Sincerely,

John

Wow John, you've managed something I didn't think was possible; make my insane system (see sig) look somewhat reasonable.

You do realize that 10k SCSI drives and bonded GbE is insane overkill for just about anybody? I'm not sure what you paid for those drives, but that plus the cost of the SCSI RAID adapter could get you an entire new and more practical solution.

Ahahah!
I'm not crazy...I SWEAR!

Its been a long time I had this setup in plans.
This one system will serve my whole network, of 10+ PCs.
My whole plan if that I want to be able to stream video [from the server] on all of those PCs at the same time with NO network lag (no that that will be the case in practice - but a standard I want my network to adhear to).

As of now everything on the network with the exception of this server and HTPC will be running of a 100 connection. I have a kick ass 5509 [overkill] switches with a gigabit blade.

Most of the computers other then this server and the htpc will not have hardrives bigger then 60gig and will house just the OS and program installs.

The server will live in the wiring closet, with the switches (i have a pair of those - but one in use - i may go nuts and use it for load ballancing...what load?! ;)

Anyway - i'm just having some summer fun...

Now if anyone could answer my questions I would be soooo happy...

My reading on the backward compatibility yeilded very little.

Sincerely,

John

First, Welcome. :-D

Here is a SCSI hot swapable insert for a standard case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121403
I believe thses take 80 pin hard drives.

If you buy your adaptor card as a 'kit' or retail package, they usually come with the proper cable and terminator.

In the last few months I've had numerous problems with Adaptec cards, therefore anything LSI looks good.
