Hi all,
I have an external Seagate FreeAgent 750GB HDD, and trying to use it via the eSata interface. The problem I am facing is that, it hangs when trying to copy a large (>3GB) file TO it from my main disk.

It will seriously hang, the computer becomes unresponsive (the mouse works, but can't start any program at all, not even an explorer window).

In smaller files (650MB) there is no problem. Also, there is no problem when using the USB interface (although I haven't tested it thoroughly).

The motherboard used is an Asus P5K Deluxe. I have experienced this problem in Windows XP AND Windows Vista, 32 and 64-bit versions.

Any help?

NTFS is the only filesystem I use.
Update: after testing, I realized the problem also occurs when copying a number of smaller files (say, 1GB).

So, it is after a given period of time in which copies are taking place? Does it occur when copying the same about of files from the drive?

I have found the XP seems to stall when copying large and/or lots of small files. My guess is it is taking some sort of inventory before it starts the actual copy process. Moving 4-5GB accross the network causes it to seemingly hang for upwards of 5 minutes. Then it starts the copy process.

I have a homemade eSATA enclosure without these problems under win XP 32-bit, so I'm going to suggest you take a look at the SATA interface speed that you have it setup for.

Are you able to change the Seagate drive to SATA 1.5 Gb vs SATA 3.0 Gb? See if you can do the same for your motherboard and force them both to SATA 1.5 Gb and try the test again.
