Hi,
This is my first post here, it seems like this is a pretty helpful place, hopefully some one can help me out!

I have a StorageTek L180 Tape Library hooked up directly via SCSI to a Dell PowerEdge 2650 Server(Windows Server 2003). I'm using Symantec Backup Exec 11 The Server sees and recognizes the Library as a device. The tape drive in the Library however is not even showing up in the Device Manager. The tape drive is connected via a different SCSI card(which operates fine except for seeing the tape drive)

My Question is: The error i receive is "Host Adapter Configuration Error." "SCSI BIOS Not Installed" for the tape drive SCSI card. Since i dont want to boot from the tape drive do i need the BIOS installed? and if it doesnt matter if it is or not installed why cant i see the drive in Device Manager?

The device manager says the SCSI cards are operational.

Thanks in advance!!!

Welcome!
During the computer boot up you should see the SCSI card info and a way to enter the SCSI setup menu (IE: Press Ctrl A to enter setup. Or something similar). There you configure the card for the device that is attached to it.
On reboot enter the motherboard BIOS and set the boot devices and the order of boot up. (Floppy, CD, hard drive etc)

What does robtest say?

Usually in C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Volmgr\bin

Has the drive worked before in the past in this configuration? Swapping out for a different SCSI cable would be a first step.

Thanks for the responses!

I'm not all too familiar with SCSI, so bare with me. The setup should have worked, i got the library used and there are no errors on startup besides the "Host Configuration Error" on the tape drive adapter. The cables are good, the card should be good as well since when connected to the library it operates as expected. From what i have been reading it seems like the BIOS is only needed if i want to boot from the tapes (which i do NOT want). So i guess my only concern is why it is not showing up in device manager or Backup Exec.

Give me a few i'll post the robtest?? i dont know what it is but i'll take a look

Thanks!

That folder does not exist, the program is install at : C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\

there is no Volmgr folder in that directory. What is the robtest? maybe i can find it somewhere.

The BIOS on the SCSI card must be setup properly for the device that is connected to it. The SCSI card then reports it to the operating system. That could be the reason it does not show up in device manager.
If the power was off for an extended amount of time, the SCSI card BIOS could have gotten stupid.
And, In the SCSI card BIOS, you can tell it that the device is bootable or not.
At least with the few SCSI cards I have experiance with.
