I just got an external hard drive enclosure and it's based on the Ali M5641A1 chipset. I want to know if I can drop in a 300Gig drive that I don't have as of yet.

I checked out the white paper for the drive and I don't see that it suports 48Bit LBA. I googled a bit and what I found was that some of the enclosures that mention 48Bit LBA and M5641 seem to be teamed up with an Oxford chip.

Ali product page, no 48bit LBA mentioned

this looked promising, do I trust this?

Well it turns out it's crap. Lots of disconnects and "delayed write failures." Tried a WD800JB and a 300g 7200.8 with it and got the same results.

My other two USB 2.5" drives have no problem whatsoever. One is Oxford 911 and the other is god knows what, but it works fine. One vote for the return column!

Update: Turns out it was my cable. Don't know why but this drive doesn't like this one cable I was using. The cable worked on my other drives so I didn't think anything of it, swapped the cable later on though and now seems fine. Moved a couple 4 gig files to it no problem.
