Storage? I am Storage!
Most corporates use a password on the Windows screen saver to 'protect' the session from unauthorized access. This is one of the twenty thousand less endearing Windows characteristics, due to the fact that the workstation proceeds to lock out everyone except the original user or an administrator. Too bad if the user left a record locked or something!
We want to log off recalcitrant users, thereby freeing databases and files for backup etc and just making the PC available for someone else to use.
The solution is supposed to be the WinExit (Logoff) screensaver in the Windows Resource Kit. This dates back to 1996, but does work ... as long as you're an administrator!
Microsoft has acknowledged the problem ... and done absolutely nothing about it (we're talking Win2k by the way). The half-assed workaround is to edit the registry to provide sufficient access for users to run the POS.
Just one (fatal) problem: it doesn't work - at least with a Samba server acting as PDC. In other words, it only works with local users, not domain users. :-?
I'm granting reg key update rights to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version' to 'Everyone', but it still complains.
Has anyone used this or some similar tool?
