I am sure that this topic has been addressed before on this forum, however, I'm to lazy to find the threads. I normally use Windows Media Player for recording music to my computers, and it has served me quite well. However, I would like to record in MP3 format, and WMP9 does not do this for free. Are there any good Open Source or Freeware programs that I could use for recording from CD to MP3 format? Thanks for your help.

FLAC

Needs lots of disk space compared to MP3, but that's because it uses lossless compression.

Great for long-term archiving as it's effectively future-proof. To do so, generate FLAC files from your CDs just once.

Now, need MP3s? No need to dig up your CDs again, just run a FLAC->MP3 generator. Two years later and you switch to Ogg Vorbis? Still no need to dig up your CDs, just run a FLAC->Voribis generator. And at any time, if you want CD quality sound without having to find the CD, just play the FLAC file itself.

Not for everyone, but I've been sold on it since sometime in 2000.
