If any of you play this any more, I play on a new server with some folks at work. CS is up to version 1.6 with the steam client. So far it is working well for me.

FoCA's Pizza & Beer Server

If you're interested, send me a PM/IM or give a time when you think you may be on, I'd love to start something like this back up again.

na, it wont take you more than a couple hours to get the hang of it and after a couple week of playing you'll see how good you really are.. after that it's a slow road to improvement without the help of a better mouse/keyboard and learining tactics.

Most maps are pretty small and gameplay is decently fast (each round is usually capped to 3-5 minutes). When you die you can explore the map and see the living without interfearing with the game so it gives you a chance to learn the map and stategies of the better players(or campers).

CS retails usually costs about $20 new at any computer store. Alternatively you can buy a copy of halflife and download the CS mod for it. To play CS you do need a unique ID (called a WON ID) so don't share your serial with anyone and I would be hesitant to buy a used copy unless it's from a friend who no longer plays.

Handy, I haven't played CS since I moved... I'll install it and download the 1.6 update. Maybe I'll see you on the server.

ps. you need the latest version to play (or atleast you need the same version as the server you want to play on)... I believe it's best to just download the full version vs installing 1.0 and then updating.

You can goto filemirrors.com and search for steaminstall_cs.exe The game is about 388.53MB. During the install it may ask for the CD, otherwise it will jsut ask for your serial number the 1st time you try to play as a client.

Merc, if you're interested, I can setup my machine to host a very limited game with 3 to 4 people. This way you won't have to jump right into a 20 person match if that is a concern. My connection isn't fast enough to go beyond 3-4 people because my upload is capped at 100 Kbps.

Once you get used to the different guns and purchasing system, it will make game play easier.

I ended up using a microphone to chat with the folks on this server, it works well. If you have one, it makes for a nice addition to the game. (I think they also have voice masking)

crap handy, this steam client seems a bit... unresponsive. I havent played since 1.5 (I started playing at 1.1).

If you want I can host a server, I have 384kbit/sec and used to host several HL servers on my linux box...

Maybe steam will finally dl and fully install and I can start playing/serving.

Got any suggestions? I installed steam and told it i wanted to play CS/DOD... it asked for my serial and then it kind of froze. I closed it out and opened it back up and it showed CS as bing added, but not DOD... I tried to join a server and it's back to just being unresponsive... network usage is nil.

I have only played CS in my own home with my networked PCs. Really great game! My dial up sucks for speed so accessing to another server is unlikely. They have a place called PC gaming arena in a local mall here that just has about 40 PCs which can all be hooked up to play. I keep meaning to go in there but I just know I'll be alive for about two seconds before some 10 year old circle strafes me.

No Crossbow in this game...that's only in half-life.

No more bunny hops Blake...CS got rid of that in 1.5 and above I believe. Blake...did you open the correct firewall ports?

1200 UDP
27000 to 27015 UDP
27030 to 27039 TCP

Want to hear something funny Craig. The guy who owns PC gaming arena (I believe his name is eddie) used to play counter-strike with us over at storagereview.com. We used to play as a crew over on thier sever before it shut down. His screen name was (and still is) fugazi for those who may remember him.

I went to visit him to check the place out and then sent him an e-mail. He remembered me, but that was a long while back.

If you feel up to hosting the game, that would be great, but feel no pressure to do so.

I didn't have any problems installing steam, but at this moment I can't even open it because it is throwing an unhandled exception. I had a slight problem updating counter-strike. Try rebooting if all else fails. :) I'll post the link to steam's website once I can find it.

I ended up fixing the problem and played a game or so before work.. it was just that steam was overloaded and it was taking a while to install CS, but wasn't giving me any progress indicator. Guess I was just impatient.

I also downloaded and installed the linux server for HL and setup a CS server.

If your interested. Don't know if I'll mess with admin mod/HLStats or anything this time. Maybe AdminMod.

I'll check out your CS server sometime tomorrow night. I need to go to bed and forget the redsox just lost AT GAME 7.

Merc, let us know if you're interested in playing a small game together so we can plan something.

I have to find my install CD first. That's going to be an adventure.

Also, I will be pathetic. I haven't played any FPS in probably 18 months.

Yeah. The Serial number that's on the slipcover the CD should've been in.

Oh well. I found the CD, but not the slipcover. So I paid for a copy of HalfLife today, since my BlueShift key doesn't work.

Is there any way to download the 700MB of updates without registering as a member of StupidDownLoadOutHouse.com?

Why the hell can't I connect to any servers? I spent $#%##$ing forever downloading Steam and it says I can't #$%#$%ing connect. Do I need to open a port or something?

Oh. How silly of me. I need to do everything through STEAM, not the game.
I have Blake's server bookmarked. I even played him for like 5 seconds, before my cat decided my keyboard was a good place to sit.

Clocker and I played a few rounds on the FoCa server tonight. Maybe tomorrow night we can meet up on Blake's server for a few rounds of fun?

If that doesn't work, I can always install worms 2. :)

Don't sweat it, I was hoping the point of Blake's server was to avoid the worry of public humilation. I've only recenlty rejoined playing counter-strike after being away from it for 8 to 10 months or more, so I'm pretty rusty myself. (I've lost track how long it has been)

I have a birthday dinner to go to at 1:00PM today (early dinner) so I'll check in when I get home to see if anyone is around.

Which has 20/20 players at the moment, and a tendency to kick me if I act as a spectator for more than 30 seconds...

Blake's is free today.

What's your Steam ID, anyway?

Hey guys, im back from vacation. It's good to be back home.

I saw that you played on the server Merc, but it wasn't with me.. anybody is free to join the servers so you'll see random people joining just to play a public game.

My server hasn't been busy at all, but I have offered it to my CS clan as a place where they are welcome to play so maybe traffic will pick up. If you see anybody with the [HJE] tag in front of their name they belong to the clan. They should treat you with respect and be pretty good sports. If they are not, feel free to tell me and I'll kick their butts ;-)

I play under the title [HJE] blakerwry, so feel free to join me if you find me online.

I will be checking the server regularly starting around 9:30PM and should be able to play until about 12:30AM or whenever my eyes tell me it is time to go.

Only for now until you break open the can of whoopass. If more people play, the games become less repetitive. I had fun anyway, if you're interested we should try to arrange another game sometime.

If I have sometime I'll put on my normal orange vest with the concentric circles on it and have a go. Handy and Clocker have seen it many a time.

Merc, I call it a good round if I can maintain a 2 death: 1 kill ratio. I only get that maybe 60% of the time. Not to discourage you but either practice over time did not help me or it would have required more time than I would give it.
