Size in memory is not the issue (I normally browse with a fast connection).
Size on the screen is.
Ever read stuff talking about 'the fold' and how your pertinent web content better be above it or nobody is going to scroll down and find the wonderful stuff you have hidden below? Anyway big images or big signatures in general take away valuable screen real estate from the thread and cause more scrolling.
Give me a break. It's not so big (less than 320x80)!
And it does it's job: it's a static (not an annoying dancing GIF) purple sig that marks my posts and advertizes a very good p2p application, as a sig may do.

I write because I hadn't tried it and I notice there are dialects. This kind of encoding was difficult for me too.
Prof, I was able to understand it, but I did have to read the 1st part (Your search - l33t ha}{0r- did not match any documents. ) a couple times... the rest comes easy, just blur your eyes and don't concentrate too hard and it comes right to you.
