I have the IDE drive in an external FireWire/USB 2 enclosure. The drive spins down about every 10 minutes if not accessed. When accessed, the computer hesitates until the drive spins up again. Yeah, the behaviour is normal, but is there something that can be done? Maybe some simple ap that would access the drive very briefly every few minutes?

Thank you.

I don't recall seeing any external drive I own doing that. I turn off power management on all my machines. I don't suppose you've checked your power settings as a first step?

Thanks. It acts the same on two systems. It is now connected to the laptop. The power saving is set to 30 minutes so that is not a cause. I think there is something in the firmware of generic Oxford 911 bridge.

you could use the task scheduler of each machine to do something as simple as a dir listing...

or perhaps put an empty .bat file (a .bat file must have atleast one command in my expereince in order to run... the ECHO command works fine) on the drive and have task scheduler run it every 10 minutes.
