Is this a bad mix? The gigabyte GA-7DXR+ is only a 4x AGP Pro 1.5v slot, and the ATI 9800 pro is 8x/4x. In theory it looks compatible, but I wanted to hear from those who have tried an 8x AGP on a 4X MB in the past. ATI claims: "(Intel® Pentium® 4, AMD® Athlon® or higher with AGP 8X (0.8v), 4X (1.5V) or Universal AGP 3.0 bus configuration (8X/4X))".

Somewhere in time.
I have a Gigabyte 9600XT (8x/4x) running in a 4x/2x AGP slot (Intel D845PT in a Dell Dimension 4400). Works flawlessly. Incidentally, Gigabyte's website lists it as an 8x (only) card.

Are you having problems? I went with a 9600 because the 9800 gulps a lot more power and the power supply in this machine was limited. The 9600 is plenty fast for the intended purpose and saved quite a bit of money too.

Sheesh, I forgot to add that the AGP slot in the Dell is 1.5V as well.

Dimension 4400

Intel® Desktop Board D845PT

AGP bus protocols 4x/2x modes at 1.5 V

The AGP connector supports 1.5 V AGP 4X and 2X add-in cards.

The D845PT board is only compatible with 1.5 V AGP cards.

There are too many damn variables. Check out these links:

ATI KnowledgeBase - AGP Compatibility.
Says 9800 uses 1.5V, 0.8V signalling, is 4X, 8X compatible.

Sorry for misleading, there is no problem. This question was more of a pre-check before suggesting this solution to someone with a 4x AGP MB. On paper it looks feasible, but I wanted to hear if anyone came across problems with a similar config. This person is looking to upgrade from a classic ATI 64 DDR card, so I was suggesting a 9800 to give some extended life while we play games at LAN parties for the next couple years.

This friend currently has a sparkle 400W PS in his rig (Athlon 1800+). He says it's very loud and would like something quieter. I suggested the Seasonic S12-330 ATX12V 330W PS as it fits in his price range. I suspect it's a better quality unit than the sparkle, so the loss of wattage may not be as it seems by face value. Should I be concerned with this PS when recommending a 9800 pro?
