how to move an expansion unit (san)

Hopefully someone out there has more knowledge than me on this subject. Im have a storage array with an expansion array connected to it. The issue is the array is at end of life but the expansion isn't! (dumb move by senior IT) I use the exp module to store my archive data. Besides moving all files off, setting up expansion connected to a new unit, I know that will work. Is it possible to move expansion and keep file structure intact?

What make / models are we talking about and what storage system including fs?

the unit with the data is an ibm exp810 connected to an IBM ds4700.
