I have a PS/2 KVM switch that connects two systems. My old PS/2 mouse was dying, so I replaced it with a USB mouse and PS/2 adapter. However, the mouse is not recognized. Is this typical behaviour for a USB mouse and adapter on a KVM switch? Thanks.

I don't think it's your KVM. Apparently some USB mice are strictly USB only. Examples are some models of Kensington and Logitech mice.

I recently bought a Logitech that had a USB connector only, and no USB to PS2 adapter in the retail package. Wouldn't work on a PS2 port using a known good USB to PS2 adapter.

USB is REALLY poorly implemented for some things. There are a lot of USB devices that won't work unless they're attached directly to a root hub. Converter products (USB-Serial, USB-SCSI) have been hit or miss for me. I bet your mouse just isn't getting whatever the hell it needs to work from your KVM.

Solution: Bye a PS2 mouse or a better PS to USB converter.

Speaking from experience, I know that Logitech's converter doesn't work with Belkin KVMs.

Thanks. The adapter doesn't work even when correctly connected to either system. I assumed that USB to PS/2 adapters were standard and that there would be no problem with an mechanical PS/2 mouse. Apparently that is not the case. Does MS still make the good old mechanical PS/2 intellimouse with wheel? I haven't seen any for sale in a few years.

I used to run into this here and there. It pretty much came down to what does it say it's capable of on the sticker underneth and if that doesn't say anything only expect it to work with whatever conector is on the end of the cord.

What did the package of your new mouse say it was compatible with?

You think that sucks, try finding a serial mouse these days.

Maxburn said it all, Lunar. I don't think anybody makes PS2 mice anymore; at best they're USB with a working PS2 adapter.

Most of Microsoft's mice come with the PS2 adapter, so you should be okay there. I'm using a MS USB mouse + PS2 adapter successfully in a KVM switch.
