Here's the scenario: LAN with a 10/100 switch. There's a separate DSL router. Three workstations have fixed IP addresses; the rest are dynamic, served up by the router, but all specify the router as gateway. Printing is direct to fixed address print servers (no file server queues).

After a power outage, there is a variety of symptoms, such as being unable to print to one of the printers. We reboot the router and some problems disappear, but still can't print from a workstation with a static IP address. Tried deleting the first job, Windows says it's deleting but doesn't get any further. Logged in as Administrator, stopped and restarted the Windows queue, tried again to delete the job, but no joy. Tried restarting the print spooler, but to no avail. In the end, had to restart the PC.

This sort of stuff happens pretty much every time there's a power failure. I'm trying to understand how printing from a fixed address PC direct to a fixed address printer could be screwed up afterwards. :(

Can anyone shed some light?

I suspect it is a problem with the switch especially if it is a Linksys or 3COM. After a power failure, the Linksys' like to blink out and the 3COMs blink out random ports. Power cycle the switch.

Thanks, Howell. Unfortunately, I forgot to mention that the switch has its very own UPS ... it's the only device that's guaranteed to stay up - for several hours at least. :(

Some of those 3COMs are very cheap. I bet they don't have any power conditioning/capacitors inside. I've seen them have trouble even connected to a UPS.
