New Flicker In Monitor

This just happened. Just now.
I diconnnected my monitor at the video card because I needed access to the inside of my case. When I powered up and plugged my monitor back in I was greeted with a flickering screen that won't go away no matter how I set my refresh. Up until five minutes ago my monitor was rock solid with no unwelcome artifacts whatsoever.
I jiggled and reseated all the connectors and inspected for broken pins. Nothing. Very frustrating.

I am loathe to begin an arduous troubleshooting process involving monitor and video card swapping. I simply cannot afford the time today.

Radeon 7500 + Samsung 957MB.

Any ideas?

check the cord at both the monitor and the vid card (even though you only disconencted at the card)... check cable route and make sure it is the same (or atleast doesnt run parallel to the power cables).

Does it flicker at the BIOS/POST screens or just in windows?

reseat the video card....

degauss. Also check the pins again.

Well, I degauss on a regular basis because my stereo speakers flank my monitor. Rest assured that's one of the first things I did.
Anyway, the probelm is intermittent, I've discovered. I can't reproduce it yet, however. Sometimes I power up and the screen is wonky and sometimes it's solid. One thing I have noticed, tho, is that when wonk sets in, the refresh rates are selectable from 43Hz to 160Hz at all resolutions, whereas when it's behaving my range is 60Hz to 85Hz at 1280 x 1024.

I checked the pins (by lightly checking each on with a pin extractor) on the card end of the monitor cable (the monitor end is captive) and all seems fine. I can't test for continuity without cracking the monitor open, and I don't quite feel like doing that now, so I'll have to go by my visual inspection.

Strange? Annoying? Yes.

Somewhere in time.
How old is it? It may be dying. In my experience from some years ago, Samsung montiors tended to die early.

My Viewsonic PT775, purchased circa April 1999 and in use since then (except for one year in-between when it was in the box) exhibits symptoms of flicker when viewing an all white page. When display properties are inspected, refresh is set to 85 Hz. The on-screen set-up menu confirms this. I can only believe that it's going la-la. 3 years of use, 14 hours a day. :(

Not to mention the irritating "black-out for a second" problem it exhibits randomly. The factory supposedly "fixed" this under warranty. Methinks they just kept it for a week, and shipped it back in another box.

When it is acting wonky

check display properties->settings->advanced->displays->moniter->refresh override

Compare to when it is acting correct

If you can, also confirm current refresh rate with the monitor bezel controls. I had a couple monitors that would flicker if the refresh rate was set higher than the monitor supported. When it goes wonky does Windows ID the monitor correctly?

Hmm... I never considered that it might be a software problem.
Next time it happens I'll have a look.

Mark, there are no such settings in my display properties.
