The fan in my SCSI enclosure's power supply is intermittently making some awful noise and vibrating the heck out of the case. I haven't done any research into causes and fixes, but I'd like to see if anyone here has some experience with this kind of situation.

I'm hoping that I won't have to open up the PSU and replace the fan....

That has been my experience. However, you could check to see if there is any amount of dirt that could be throwing the blades off balance, thus causing the vibration and noise.

Your power supply fan is dying. You have two choices: Either replace the power supply or take apart the PS and replace the fan.

Warning - There are large capactiors in power supplies that will carry a signifigent charge even when the power is unplugged. Those capactors can kill given right circumstances. So please know what you are doing if you choose to take the PS apart.

After doing some research, that is my conclusion as well.

The fan clearly isn't pushing as much air as it was when I got the case less that a year ago, and barely moves any air when making the grinding noises. The case was cheap and fan quality appears to have been commensurate.

I found some basic instructions at SPCR here:

I have a Panaflo L1A which I was going to take out of my computer anyway which should do the job (and more quietly). I'm not keen on being electrocuted, so I will take precautions. Several people have suggested unplugging the supply and trying to turn on the enclosure, to drain some of the power, and then waiting ~20 minutes for the caps to discharge furthur.

Exactly, you can drain nearly all the power by leaving the unti unplugged and trying to turn it on..

however I have never seen evidence that a PSU holds much electricity anyway. I've taken several apart without incidence. A monitor(CRT), however, carries enough voltage to kill or atleast shock the heck out of you.
