Anyone here have orchids? How do you handle, them? What do you water them with, how close to the windows do you keep them?

I have two now. THe first dropped it'w flowers 4 months ago, but has now grown a new big leaf.

My favourite flower btw.

My way of watering:

I immerse the flower in water once a week, for about 5-10 minutes, and the let the water run out before putting it in a pot again. The flower in itself is in a plastic pot, and I have a ceramic pot for it to sit in.

THe water is either rainwater, melted snow or, if everything else is finished I buy some springwater and use that.

I use some extra nutrition in the water about 2 times a month.

Placement:

I have the pot standing on top of my loudspeaker in the living room, about 2 meters from the window. This way it get's lots of light, but not so much direct sunlight.

I also have a humidifier in the living room, maybe that helps too. The machine is for us humans though. The air is very dry otherwise.

Seems pretty easy to handle orchids, so far. We'll see if my first orchid makes new flowers in a few months.

Other than my 2 orchids, I don't care for flowers. At least not taking care of them, I do like having some flowers/something green in the house.

At last check, orchids are saprophytes -- they grow on trees, not in soil. I'm not familiar with domestic varieties, but commercial farms always have them growing on a trellis and getting sprayed regularly with water (they are native to rainforests, after all).

It sounds to me that it may not be planted correctly and, more importantly, isn't getting water in the right amounts. Surely, there is a site somewhere with appropriate care instructions.
