>85% of the population in my city is either white, middle eastern, or other non-black. Does that make it OK to take similar action to favor one race in my city? I don't think so.

There is already enough animosity between blacks and middle easterners in metro-Detroit and this will only fan the flames. Many middle eastern people around here see business opportunities in the downtown area because of the low property values and invest a lot of money there with their various businesses...this is a slap in the face to them and business racism to the extreme.

Not arguing that.

White communities in my area de-facto do the same thing. The just aren't as open about it.

From the article:

The report does not call on the city to stop immigration -- and the city wouldn't have any power to stop it, even if it wanted to -- but the report does call on the city to level the playing field between blacks and the newcomers who it says are economically surpassing them.

This is the same old song-when blacks can't compete on their own for whatever reason, they want the government to step in and level the playing field. Hint-it didn't work then and it won't work now. Maybe if more blacks stayed in school and didn't have babies when they were 14 they would be more able to compete. Why doesn't the Detroit City Council address this instead? I'll tell you why-because we'll be "blaming the victim".

I agree that racist exists in all communities. Blacks are racist against whites and vice-versa. White business owners in black communities will always suffer from discrimination just as the blacks may suffer in the communities you mentioned above. Blacks, whites, Arabs, whoever, can choose to do it if they are that closed-minded but that is their choice. That is a social issue, not a governmental policy. No governmental policy should support racism like the current proposal in Detroit does. It does nothing but hurt an already strained relationship between the different ethnic groups in our community. Otherwise, we might as well go back to full fledged segregation.
