Anyone know why, despite the fact that I have SPDIF enabled and "digital output only" on my GA-7VAXP, I'm not getting sound from TOSLink to my receiver?

OS can be either 2000 or XP Pro, and yes, the backplate is connected to the motherboard.

I'm sure you have already checked this, but have you made sure that your optical cable isn't kinked and the connectors are securely pushed in. Have you used this cable with another computer so that you know it works.

If worse comes to worse buy a sound card with an optical connector. Hercules make some that work well.

Cable isn't kinked. Connector is in securely. Cable works with a CD Changer connected to the same receiver, but I did try another PC with the same motherboard and sound setup, to no avail.

No room to install a soundcard in this particular machine.

I've decided that the TOSLink connector on those boards must be a digital input, 'cause coax works beautifully for both.

Weird.

Weird.

Maybe there is a jumper or software setting to reverse the two applications.

Enable SP/DIF and Line-In goes away, even though they're different connectors.

Grumble Grumble.

Are there any mainstream sound cards that supports digital in and out AND leave the line-in functional?

Do the nforce2 boards have functional (native) digital in/out connectors?

SB xyz Platinums are out, since they dropped the daughter card for the ridiculous live drive and since they're a PITA to get working on VIA boards...

Argh this is annoying.

Check out the Gamesurround Fortissimo II Digital Edition:

I've not used it. You will have to check around about the line-in.

actually I think the regular 4 channel fortissimo II can do that.. I have a TOSLINK SPDIF in and a TOSLINK SPDIF out and the line in and the mic connector are on the DIN cable.

I don't have any TOSLINK gear to test with though.. maybe I can hook up the DVD player to it and test...

if you're intrested I can try Merc.

I didn't realize they were still being made. In point of fact. I've already got a couple of them (both of which are being used).

Live Drives are stupid. It's one thing to put a headphone connector and a line in on the front of a PC, maybe even a joystick port or TOSLink in, but why the other stuff?

Sound hardware in PCs needs to get dramatically better.
