Hey, guys,

I'm looking for a device to record telephone calls. I've gone through three modems and countless pieces of software and can't find anything that sounds halfway decent so I decided to try something like this:

Of course, whenever I'm faced with the prospect of spending money, I always try to see if I can get away with spending *less* and still acheive the desired results.

Does anyone know what goes into these handset recorders? I have a basic understanding of electronics and good command of the soldering iron. If this is just a very simple device then I'd like to try my hand at building one.

Insights?

I've put together some nForce2 systems for call recording using these as the bridge between RJ11 and audio-in. They have worked very well.

I found this.

Here is the schematic:

A Google search turns up plenty of these things. The circuits look relatively simple to build. Just get a breadboard from Radio Shack and solder away. If you don't have an assortment of parts you may need to buy those, as well as a nice case. I doubt everything will set you back more than $10. I could make most of the circuits out of spare parts I have lying around.

You might also want to check to make sure that such recordings are legal within your county/state/province/whatever.

In Indiana, recording phone conversations without consent is legal. In nearby Illinois, it's not.

You'll likely find the information you need here. (That's a useful site to bookmark, by the way.) Note that the issue can become very messy if you are on a call to a state that has different laws regarding phone call privacy.
