Storage Is My Life
I'm encountering timeout error messages when checking for mail in Thunderbird 1.5. They are not real timeouts as they occur instantly.
Windows XP SP2, AMD X2 3800, NOD32.
I've done some research that I thought I'd share here.
Most people believe this is a dual processor problem.
So some have set the processor affinity to one processor.
Some set timeout to 65535
Some downloaded the microsoft patch Q896256 for dual processor systems.
Some downloaded latest nvidia driver and do not install their firewall:
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
And AMD X2 driver:

I think the AMD X2 driver is doing the same thing as microsoft's patch and it all has to do with syncing counters between processors.
And this may be why picasa doesn't work well on my system too.

I should also mention that yesterday I thought the problem was with NOD32 as adding an exception to IMON for thunderbird.exe and rebooting seemed to solve my problem. But I took out the exception and rebooted because I want my e-mail scanned!
Also in another thread on the microsoft fix, a proposed workaround was to use folding@home or something to get the processors to 100% all the time. I am doing that so it appears this isn't a processor state issue but a clock syncing issue.
