I need some help installing Ubuntu.

Downloaded Ubuntu 6.06.1. Popped CD (it appears to be only 1 CD right?) into drive, booted. HDD is a 10GB Quantum with XP on it. Ubuntu fired up and the first option was Start or Install.

Selected that and after a few minutes, was presented with Gnome. Rebooted and got back Windows!

Reboot from CD. See above. I did notice an install icon on the desktop, but clicking that did not appear to do anything.

What have I missed? Do I need to blank the disk?

I must say, this has been the most painless install of Linux and on a quick play around, this could be the first truly useable (non-geek) Linux distro.

Now, Gnome or KDE? I'd need KUbuntu for that wouldn't I?

Out of curiosity I downloaded the desktop Ubuntu distro and proceeded to try what you have done. I created a new Virtual machine (in VMWare workstation 5.5) and connected the Ubuntu CD-ROM ISO. I powered on the VM and was presented with a simple, clean user interface within one to two minutes.

I double click the install on the desktop and went through the menus very easily and installed the OS. After about 10 minutes I had a working isntall of Ubuntu on my VM. I'm now running the updates and that too is going very smothly. I must say I'm very impressed with Ubuntu after spending a lot more time with OpenSusue 10 in comparison. I may be switching over soon after I give this a bit more evaluation. It may be a bit too simple for some Linux-loving folks, but I like it so far.

Same deal here. I was playing with OpenSuSE 10.1 x64 last week and had a few issues configuring the X-server and a couple of other niggles. Plus it took forever, ran to three CD's, and some of the install messages were less than clear.

Ubuntu just worked. Probably a little too simple, but hey, I'd rather err on the simple side than the usual Linux speak ;)

I haven't totally given up on SuSe...however Ubuntu has opened a new eye. :cyclopsani: I love the simplicity it offers.
