Where to download IE 6.0?

Not quite as stupid a question as it looks. I want to install IE 6.0 on a customer's machine to see if it resolves his AutoCAD printing problem (which we suspect may be caused by IE 5.5) All I need is the Zip file (or .exe, whatever) but the Microsoft site only offers setup.exe which is a half MB and then wants to download the rest of the thing on the fly - about 15MB.

I'm on cable, he's on dial-up. I don't like to plug customer's machines into my network (great way to pick up viruses, doing that). I just want to download IE 6.0 and drop it onto a CD and install it from there. Also, If I need it for another customer, then I have it archived.

Bloody Microsoft.

Silly ape, use your DMZ. Unless you have set up pinholes to green, you should have access to red but not green.

Don't have the DMZ set up yet, o Wise Human. Something to do with lack of time, which has something to do with spending the entire weekend, day and night, sorting out a customer's networking and virus problems (seriously nasty job that one) and all night tonight playing with AutoCRAP and printers.

But later on, yes, I will do that. But can't I just download the damn thing once? Or do I have to go over the wire to Microsoft every time I want to install it IE 6.0?

Sad that I know this but...

Using that little 500k .EXE, there is an option - and it's buried - to download the IE install files to disk instead of installing them. The full set, for 9x, NT4 and 2000, is something like 50MB.

...or, you might look and see what's being thrown in with the modems you're selling. A lot of times modem driver disks will include IE.

Ahh, thankyou Merc. I take it that I can download the setup.exe, hunt out the option, and then not install IE 6.0? I don't want to "upgrade" any of my own machines, just have the full install available on hard drive or CD so that I can install if needed. And I'll check out those modem CDs.

Hey Will did you read the rest of the thread because Groltz already found about 5 places that you can download IE6 from and he also had a link that showed how to download the full version from MS.

Yes I read it but didn't see the information I provided which allows you to create your own IE6 install. This is how ISPs do it or anyone else that distributes IE6. I didn't follow any links because none were to microsoft's site.

Then, that would likely be the one then. A "full" IE 6 installation would only be needed by someone who plans on installing it on multiple versions of Windows as opposed to just one version of Windows. What I have (I have it on a CD-R) came from a Windows Update download, where I was upgrading a Win2K box's Internet Explorer V5.0 to V6.0. I saved the Windows Update download to a separate folder before the Windows Update installation program deleted it -- which it normally does after it completes the installation. I have used it several dozen times without problem.

One tip about installation: Since I have my installation stored on a CD-R (a read-only medium, of course), I quickly discovered that it doesn't want to install directly off of the CD-R. So, what I found is that I have to copy the folder containing the IE 6 installation from the CD-R to the system's hard drive, then set the folder and files' attribute from read-only to read-write (right-click folder --> Properties --> uncheck Read Only). After this, IE 6 will install correctly, as there are some temporary files created and written to in that installation folder during the installation process. After the installation of IE 6, the Win2K box reboots, then I delete the 11+ MB install folder.

I just made my own using IERK though the resource given is a useful tool for getting old browser versions.

I got to step 6 properly, pressed next and it simply closed the window without DL'ing or doing anything.

I was using IE6 sp1 (the current version) for a W98 install on a machine running XP.

Anyway I simply used IERK and produced a CD with the current version on it and it worked like a charm. Specificly I wanted to upgrade a client's machine with the current version: He had IE5.0 and was having problems DL'ing mime email and it was crashing OE. I decided that an upgrade to IE6 sp1 was a good first step towards fixing the problem but since he was on a 28.8 modem I didn't want to do the Windows upgrade method and waste everyones time especially mine (I can use broadband and write the CD in far less time than the modem could DL IE6).

P.S. the upgrade appears to have solved the problem.

I believe I meant to say (way back when) that my installation setup was for both Win2K AND WinXP.


You need a IE6 SP-1 different setup for Win9x/ME and NT4.
