Why is the XP Windows Explorer so slow when jpg files are present. Whenever I view a folder (detail view) containing jpg files, the icon preceding the file name appears one at a time. It appears that Windows is viewing or opening the files behind the scenes, draining resources and making the conmputer unusable for many minutes or locking up. What setting or registry entry must be changed to prevent this behaviour? I am at wits end and need to finish this project tomorrow. Thanks for any help.

Thanks, but that is not it. The same thing occurs in Detail, List or Icon mode. I think Windows is making some icons in the background. Indexing service is disabled. That is one of the the first thing I do after installation. I don't normally worl with JPGs on this notebook, but the service wants them.

I just experimented a bit and this is what I've found with jpg/tiff.

Right click on the top bar, select more. Untick date modified, dimensions, etc, anything unnecessary. Then OK. Then immediately go to Tools->Folder Options->View->"Apply to all Folders".

This gives me near instant "Detail" listings.

I discovered by accident that the JPG file association with Photoshop was causing the problem, and received links confirming similar experiences. It seems there is no cure other than removing PS as the default application for JPGs. It is annoying since the problem did not occur in Win2K.
