    Power for home lab/office

So....to provide reasonable protection, and power for a few network devices for a short period of time (perhaps even <1 hour) but not servers, using conventional home power input, what what you get? Tripp Lite SMART1500LCDXL? CyberPower OR500LCDRM1U? Eaton 5P? Something else?

    Power for home lab/office

Any double-conversion UPS that seem better (reasonable quality, reasonable cost) than the others? This one? https://www.apc.com/us/en/product/SRT1500RMXLA/apc-smartups-srt-1500va-120v-lcd-rackmount-2u-6x-nema-515r-outlets/?range=61918-smartups-online&selected-node-id=27162421315

    Power for home lab/office

What do people suggest for power protection/distribution for a home lab and home office? We are doing some basement renovation including a small server room. Unfortunately, when somebody was trying to figure out the circuit breakers they may have repeatedly turned power off/on, and it seems to...

    Monitors in 2022

What are people using or recommending for monitors in 2022? I mostly do office work, have enjoyed dual and quad 27" 2K display setups in the past, and do a little gaming. I'm redoing my office so now would seem like the time to jump into 27+" 4K monitors.

SSDs - State of the Product?

If I wanted to take a motherboard (ASRock Rack C236 WS) I'm using to run TrueNAS and turn it into a desktop PC for light use, would I see much benefit to putting an M.2 SSD into a PCIe (3.0) adapter versus just using SATA? Is there a preferred reliable M.2 to PCIe adapter or are they all about...

    Old Hard Drives

IIRC, CrashPlan had a nice data deduplication feature...that seemed remarkably similar to the ZFS feature. Do you know if they actually run on ZFS?

    Old Hard Drives

I loved Crashplan....didn't they pull out of the consumer market?

Wifi APs - what's your preference these days?

I use a variety of consumer wireless routers (4) as APs to cover my house/property, some of which I flashed to DDWRT, connected to a Netgate 3100 router. Any major advantage of moving away from consumer wifi routers in favor of dedicated APs?

    Old Hard Drives

I am redoing my basement and server room (closet) and continue to use 4 TB drives from 2017-2018. SSDs are still too expensive for me.

    Home NAS

Hmmm...fiber may not offer much increased lightning protection, may be more susceptive to physical damage, might be a pain in the butt to install (I had some insulation copiously sprayed in the basement, including over the bit of conduit that it uses to leave the house), and the speed advantage...

    Home NAS

Indeed. I've now been a practicing cardiologist for 5 years! Computers remains one of my few hobbies to (try to) keep me sane.

    Home NAS

I'm a little concerned about trying to run multiple pre-terminated OC3 (LC) cables given the bulk of the connectors - the conduit I have to work with is only 1" in diameter.

    Home NAS

In my server room I have a new Mikrotik CRS328-24P-4S+RM. If I ran fiber to the detached garage I was thinking of using a Mikrotik CRS305-1G-4S+IN and use the 1GBE port to connect to the existing switch which has a bunch of POE ports for my cameras.

    Home NAS

What do you guys use for your OS on FreeNAS/TrueNAS? A USB flash drive? Conventional 2.5" SSD? A SATADOM? The FreeNAS material used to strongly suggest a USB key (to avoid taking up an unnecessary SATA port, but ServeTheHome argues that USB flash drives may not be particularly reliable. Do you...

Samsung 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD

I talked with the folks at SR immediately after the DB crash. No real backup due to user error. Lessons learned!
