    75GXP Autopsy

yep... if only more people would open their drives, one just might find a pattern... perhaps (very random speculation) the actuator arm is flexible and distorts at times doing this (if this is indeed the usual reason of failure of 75GXPs). But then again, doesnt IBM open their drives to see...

You want benchmarks or? I remember when we benchmarked a Duron 1000 with DDR memory and MSI K7T266 Pro 2 (not the duron that will be used for G@H, someone else's), they were mostly on par with eachother (Celeron 1.2@1.3 at the time) in most things (Superpi, Povray and Mathmark IIRC) If you want...

    Fujitsu's MAM3184MP With Ultra160 and 15,000

Best looking drive... Barracuda IV, X15 (I don't think the 36LPs have a different design to the original... or do they?), Atlas 10K-II/III. Worst looking? Certainly WD's old Caviar range. Big square brick. Accept only the finest: Caviar. RIGHT!!

OK, dont know why I didnt think of this before, but now managed to install as a service on my XP box. I'll have to restart it and check that everything is OK, and then if so, install it on the P3-733, and tommorow I'll get a Celeron 1.2@1.46 in the game, next week, Duron 1000 and some other...

    IBM admits DTLAxxxx/ICxxxx problems...

I have no idea why they haven't got it available on their main site. What happened with that lawsuit? Wouldn't the release of this patch be considered evidence that IBM recognises problems with the drive? I doubt anyone will be able to tell us if it works, most people have thrown out their IBMs...

What I meant was I was looking for a program that will let me minimise the programs that _I_ want to the tray - not all of them. I'm running it there in the task bar as usual till I find something that will let me select what to put in the tray and leave the rest alone in the taskbar. :wink...

HSF to fit in a micro atx case

Thought of an Asus Terminator? My flatmate has one, they come in AMD/Intel (P3/Tualatin/P4) flavours, are extremely quiet (92mm low speed fan) and you can get one over here for 150 pounds (roughly $200) which includes everything onboard - all you need is hard drive, memory and processor. Its...

    IBM admits DTLAxxxx/ICxxxx problems...

http://web6.scan.co.uk/OLQ/LogQuery.ASP Go to the bottom where is says "Click here to get HDD test utility". Link to the IBM DFT utility... and that form was a generic support form. But hey, whats that further down? Firmware update for 60GXP and 75GXPs (DTLA) for "failures due to prolonged...

I've started running it again. For the time being anyway. Toggle Minimise puts anything I minimise in the tray and that sucks... bleh. I'm looking for something else that will only minimise the programs I select. Oh and that Genome spy is junk  The search continues.

    Gaming

Try Operation Flashpoint. Its very fun but only if played multiplayer. The game is very buggy I think, I've run into problems getting it to work properly and at decent speed on several systems, random reboots (doesn't like most of the Detonator drivers though all other games play fine)...

    How quiet is your computer?

Used to have a Dual 667@735 with Molex Radial Fin fans on them. Enermax 350w PSU, YS Tech 80mm fans front and rear (3 of them) running at 7v (rear) and the front ones at low speed via the Lian Li's switch. I have modified the front and rear fan holes so as to decrease turbulence and increase...

Very nice - only thing that jars the eye (maybe) is the title text - its a little jagged. Anything smoother you can use? (perhaps make it into a graphic with antialiased text but might not be worth it (should be small in 256 colour PNG..)

    125F Interal Case Ambient Temperature

You mean those blowers? Those are nice, I have one off a Silverado, Nidec Gamma or something. I made my own system using a rear slot cover that held it up right in front of the memory on my old system and blew the air right at them.

erm... brushless DC motors such as the ones in your typical PC fan won't work the other way round. Only normal commutator motors will work this way.

    M747 MB causing major grief

For the P2-450 I'd go either for an Asus P2B or something like the Soyo SY-6BA+III. Solid reliable boards though the Asus has many jumpers to fiddle with but once you set them its one of the most reliable and stable P2-P3 boards.

What are your opinions on this?

Sounds like what Headlight software did with GetRight some years back. When one tried to enter the serial from the classic "PC Oscar" program/database it wouldn't accept the code (or any other for that matter) and then redirect your browser to a page telling you off for what you did.
