Yes, it is a nice compact lens with decent quality. I just wish it was wider. If they could build a successor that goes to 12 mm, I would be all over that. As it stands, the 12-60/2.8-4 is great, but it's big and heavy compared to the tiny 14-42. Totally changes the feel and user experience IMO...

That raises a question in my mind which I will put to the group: do you guys think that I should refrain from posting inline images in these threads and just provide a link instead? Dust removal tech is decent if you don't expect it to obviate the need to clean your sensor at all. It only...

There you go, dd. That's more like it. Play with the levels & curves a bit to lower the mids and shadows and increase the contrast bit and you're there. You'll have a bit of haze from the mist no matter what, but a CPL should reduce it somewhat...

Nice pic dd! Like LM said, it is very blurry. You used the right aperture (f/8 ), shutter speed (1/750 s), and ISO settings (200), so no problem there. Noise reduction and JPEG compression will blur things a bit, but it looks like there was more involved than that. Maybe you're out of focus...

Garmins are usually the best overall. I have a refurbed Garmin StreetPilot c330. Very good. It's a bit too big and the battery life too short for portable use, but it's fine in the car. The much slimmer Nuvis are fine for portable use while traveling, but you have to make sure they have the...

Uda, the CA wasn't too bad in this part of the image; there are areas with a lot more. The local contrast and sharpness is, objectively speaking, relatively poor. Yes, this is a 100% crop from a 10 MP image. I don't expect it to be very good, but I also don't expect it to be this poor. Remember...

dd, I think you should think about how much size and weight you're willing to carry around as well. You can always go big and get a faster, sharper lens with VR as long as you don't mind paying for it, but it's going to be double the size and weight. And the longer you go, the more lens speed...

Oh no, I don't own any Canon dSLR equipment. I have all Nikon (and now Olympus stuff) but have been looking at a couple Canon lenses with envy because I am tired of either going light and carrying a slow consumer 70-300/4.5-5.6 VR zoom or 180/2.8 +/- 1.4x TC, or using the massive 70-200/2.8 VR...

That's a very good point, Gilbo, and that's why I've decided to try Olympus' 4/3 system -- quality optics without the size and weight. Well, not quite Pentax mini lens territory especially with their primes, but they do a decent job with the zooms. Canon has some high quality f/4 stuff too...

It depends on how much you want a single lens all-purpose solution or whether you want to specialise (UK/Cdn spelling ;) ) and have a multi-lens collection with each lens being geared towards certain uses. A couple issues that I have been pondering wrt Canon vs Nikon glass: How fast do you want your telezooms and how big/heavy are you willing to carry? How important are wide angle primes to you? IMO, these are the two main areas in which Canon has a better selection (from my perspective... I'm...

I like slrgear.com for lens reviews. The 75-300 is known as a very mediocre lens much like the Nikon 70-300 around the same price. Don't know much about the 55-250, but it will likely be better than the 75-300.

Yes, the 800/1800 was designed to be more all-purpose and have a wider gamut, but did you find the accuracy that poor? Depending on the calibration and profiles used, it's hard to say. Should we ban disposable batteries?

    Should we ban disposable batteries?

Damn the eneloops are hard to find and expensive in Canada. The Source by Circuit City is $60 for 4 AA's + charger. Other places I've looked at online cost a fortune to ship ($12-25 S&H) relative to the value of the batteries.

So I got the Olympus E-510 2-lens kit on sale ($100 off) for $800 USD at B&H Photo. It's usually $1,200-1,300 CAD + tax in Canada, so it's basically a $500 savings, or 40% off.
