I try not to be a super-picky audiophile. I really do. But I paid cash for a full set of Kef Reference-series speakers about three years ago. Those speakers cost a few thousand dollars more than my (newish) car. On the plus side, I'm in love with them and I don't regret the purchase. I also...

    DVD-A

Circuit City and Best Buy are completely worthless. Every once in a while I find something I don't have on Amazon, and that is my main source now. I probably own about 70% of all the classical music that has ever been released as DVD-Audio or SACD, but it's such a boutique product that no one...

Another Digital Camera Thread - Point and Shoot

The media is super-cheap these days. the adapter probably costs as much as the 1GB card. Can I just say that I hate, hate, HATE the eleventy billion different flash card formats? What's wrong with just CF? What's wrong with SD? Why do we need to reinvent the wheel thrice annually?

Lunar, what I do is this: I have one machine with a high end controller that can support a massive number of disks in a RAID10 arrangement and a large amount of storage. I have secondary PCs that have smaller (though by most people's thinking, still staggering) RAID0 arrays. The "smaller"...

    Poll: Anyone like to cook?

My ex- bought me a "BBQ-Pit" Crock Pot for my birthday. It's a slow cooker, but it's constructed with racks inside to do indirect heat cooking of slabs of meat. Makes wonderful ribs and chicken, which is all I've had time to use it for. Absolutely wonderful for apartment dwellers who can't have...

I am keeping him for the time being. I have not named him yet, because I don't know if he will be a permanent addition to the household, since he's turned my other male cat into a total basket case. So I need a name for him. I gave him a bath last night. By myself. He still has back claws. I...

Motherboard/processor suggestions for new PC for my mom

jtr, there is now a packed box with a Soyo (the Gigabyte board has a nonfunctional PS/2 mouse port) board, an XP/3200, Spire fan and 512MB of PC2700 RAM sitting out in my car, waiting to be shipped.

    My new system

Someone asked me today, and of course I don't know... How loud ARE the new nVidia 8800 cooling solutions? As a point of reference, I've used X1800s and X1900XTXs, and they are basically the same noise level as a 7900GS, which is the only new-ish discrete nVidia hardware I've had any contact with.

Some asshole dumped a housecat at my apartment complex. I think I saw the responsible party doing it this morning on my way to work. It's an older kitten. White fur, walks up to strange and purrs. Declawed. I can't have another cat in my apartment, but I'll be damned if I let it stay outside...

Motherboard/processor suggestions for new PC for my mom

Soyo has issues with being Soyo. Like Abit has issues with being Abit. The Gigabyte board is a GA-K7S748. It does not have an onboard NIC but it does have sound. I gave one to Clocker, once. They have an absurdly fast PATA implementation; they're completely vanilla but are wonderful hardware.

There is a performance hit when your MFT (on Windows) becomes fragmented, which seems to happen when the drive gets more than 75% full. In my case I don't particularly care: I just want all my stuff to be online. It could be on 900rpm drives for all I care, as long as I don't have to find and...

jtr, if you'd rather, I can furnish an AthlonXP/3200 + 512MB RAM + either a Gigabyte SiS board or a Soyo KT600 (has SATA ports, but it's a Soyo), instead of the A64. It's still not 100% definite when I can get the A64, and I have the XP3200 in hand right now.

1GB RAM is essential. Wireless keyboards are unreliable and/or a PITA. Speakers are usually built into an LCD, and that's as much sound as anyone needs in an office.

Good to see you again, Coug, if only for a single post. Kapersky works, and if it has a bigger footprint than AVG, it's still far less than Norton or McAfee or CA's shovelware. Regarding Spyware... I insist and make mandatory use of Firefox on all computers I support. IE Icons are removed...

Also, David's $573 box doesn't have a hard drive. But that's OK. Use a less expensive Via-based motherboard, a less expensive Sempron or A64 and you're still just fine. A couple points: A business PC does not need and may not want a DVD burner. Certainly "fleet" computers don't. Second: I'm...

That's almost fine, but I'd spring for an A64/3800 for $40 more and use a no-name 19" LCD ($170 - the extra screen size is worth it IMO), and $35 Foxconn case. The Foxconn case has a louder PSU, and that's the only down side to me, but it's measurably better, too. Those 2.4GHz 3800s absolutely...

MovieFactory works, but it's plenty buggy. It has the problems you've mentioned, and also a problem with any video longer than two hours. Nero's stuff is better but the problems you have don't go away completely. These days I stick with Nero, simply because it's one less program to deal with...

nVidia's disk controller can be pretty awful. Vidcap hardware in general sucks unless you're doing DV over firewire. I haven't found THAT many problems but getting it set up almost alwys takes longer than I think it should. Have you thoroughly tested your motherboard without your cards?

Realistically, I wouldn't buy a Dell under any circumstance. I'd sooner take an HP "business" machine, and if you know the general forum opinion of HP, you know that's pretty far from a compliment. The major problem I have with brand-name PCs is that for as long as it takes me to build a...

    Favourite TV series

"Heroes" is another show worthy of consideration. It's people with superpowers in a nifty dramatic series that's played straight, rather than as schlocky Science fiction. Kind of like the early episodes of the X-Files. Also, Battlestar Galactica deserves a mention or twenty in this thread...

Any Samsung CLP-510 color laser printer issues?

I've set up maybe six CLP-510s in the last year and a half. They're less annoying than other small printers. People whine about toner costs, but they do that no matter what. Duplexing and LAN support are the big two features that make them so worthwhile. The fact that they are not loud is the...

HD Encoding is all about hard disk write speeds and some kind of staggering amount of disk space. We all hate RAID0 but it's the best way to go to actually do that kind of work. I'm not sure of CPU requirements but I'm guessing something with a modern system bus (hypertransport) is probably...
