It's actually 8 Maxtor drives in RAID10, and 2 "loose" 120GB Samsung drives run off the motherboard. It runs 2000 Server on an AMD2800 with 1GB RAM. I went on a buying spree not too long ago. It's about 3/4 full with video. Not even half of it is pr0n.

I did try myth some time ago, and I wasn't really impressed with it. Snapstream impresses me, it just doesn't work very well. :( I suppose some improvements might've been made in ~7 months, but to be honest, none of my Linux machines are set up with hardware to make an attempt at video capture...

The reason I own a tivo is that snapstream won't stop crashing. If I load nforce2 IDE drivers, I get crashes after as little as 2 minutes. Wrong version of MMC? Crash. Wrong 3ware driver? Take a wild guess... These aren't app errors or bluescreens, these are land-of-DOS hard locks. Snapstream...

    Building a dirt-cheap HTPC....

ATI doesn't have an HD capture solution at the moment and Snapstream doesn't support HD either. 720p = 1280x720 = no way on current capture hardware. And Snapstream doesn't belong in the same sentence, without a negative modifier, to the "S" word. You know, "stable". The PVR card DOES bring...

    Building a Storage Server Thread

It's pretty easy to set up and manage. Per e_dawg, there are some idiots (not that e_dawg is an idiot) for whom the insta-upgrade between utterly-inadequate-for-anything-but-prototyping MS Access and SQL Server makes it the ONLY solution.

Pro Tools is a very common Mac-based mixing/looping/sampling program. For a DJ or amateur performaner, it's a gift from the gods. It's REALLY easy to use and you can work miracles with it. But, because it's really easy to use, there's no effort involved. It's very much a case of "throw shit on...

Why do people love the Barracuda ATA drives?

IIRC the 160GB 7200.7 SATA has a 3 year warranty. The most recent drives I've purchased for myself have been MaxLine II 250GB models. Those have been the only exception I've made to the "only Samsung" rule in the last eight months.

It can't be anything but noise. Seagate and Samsung drivers exist largely to make Maxtor, IBM and WD drives look faster, I think. Can't be price. Everyone else is cheaper (in small quantities, anyway). Go look at any page of price listings on pricewatch. Let me know how many times you had to...

The LC02 is in fact several kinds of lust-inspiring but I have to wonder if it's worth $175 with no PSU. It sure is a pretty case though. The generic 2x PCI or 1xAGP+1xPCI riser is really interesting, however, since a component like that would be the perfect solution for my needs. I've got a...

    1. The Rolling Stones deserve painful, hideous death. I say that about a lot of things. I'm a very bitter man. But as usual, I mean it. Yeah, that was the first replacement I thought of, too. I *really* like the Sonata. Spent the last 20 minutes looking at microATX desktops. They all have something wrong. When DVD-ROM was a new format, dual-layer disks were not available for pressing. Dual-sided discs are still cheaper than dual-layer (the layers have to be pressed seperately), so some (ahem) video companies still use them. If you really want, there are dual-sided blank DVD-Rs, too. The DVD...
