National Do-Not-Call List Open for Registration

New York sent Daniel Patrick Moynihan to the Senate. Hardly something to complain about. I can get behind high taxes (as long as they aren't regressive taxes like sales tax) for social services. People deserve better than homelessness. There's nothing worse than seeing someone wither and die...

Television as it presently exists would cease without commercials. Besides, on the rare occasions I see regular TV, the commercials are usually more entertaining than the crap that comes on between them. Since the support for this was so widespread, why didn't the legislation just out-and-out...

    Best movie you've seen

Anyone seen "Punch Drunk Love" yet? It just came out on video in the US. Interesting movie. Very beautifully shot. There's some REALLY interesting art direction in that movie. If you happen to watch it, pay attention to the use of colors. Barry (Adam Sandler) wears a solid blue suit and red tie...

    Time for Heresey!

Gotta concur with Greg and honold: The desktop lives and dies on low access times. High STRs are basically meaningless. How often are you loading 20MB in a sustained burst from a disk drive? How often are you seeking around to access DLLs? I'd be a die hard SCSI guy in a heartbeat, except that...

National Do-Not-Call List Open for Registration

I think it's a shameless example of the current regime shamelessly pandering to the masses. 17 months from now, when voters go to the polls, they won't remember Enron or Bechtel or the Patriot Act. They'll remember that George W. "Asshat" Bush stopped the phone calls that they used to have to...

TigerDirect - Credible or should be avoided?

They're mass market, like Fry's or Best Buy, only heavily shifted toward PC goods. I've heard horror stories of Tiger shipping out returned motherboards without manuals or interface cables, of receiving multiple damaged cases or ISA products when PCI was ordered. But, I've also heard goodness...

    MiniITX Cooling

Holy crap. Spacewalker.com's main page takes 2 minutes and 48 seconds to load @ 26.4. I'm starting to think motherboard manufacturers just hate me. (next there will be an "improved" version that includes flash and uses java to animate all the text, or something). I got a good look at the very...

It Professional's role in preventing piracy

Here's an interesting thought. I work in scads of different places, annually. I see a lot of different attitudes towards pirated software. Some places are hardcore about not pirating software. Those are places where the secretary makes do with wordpad and no one has winzip installed. Those...

On my single solitary XP machine, it says "Windows XP Professional 2002 Version Service Pack 1". It doesn't say that I installed from a volume license or retail disk or MSDN disk (mine is from the Indiana University Volume License, actually). In the normal place in the registry...

    MiniITX Cooling

For the non-EPIA mini-ITX machine, how the heck is cooling handled? There can't be a full-size fan in those things, right? I notice today that there are mini-ITX systems from shuttle that support real desktop chipsets, which means real-desktop CPUs and therefore real desktop heat. Anyone know...

[NEWS] - FreeBSD turned 10 years old yesterday.

FreeBSD is faster for a lot of serverish tasks, can be updated easily and seems generally less flakey and more Unix (TM) like than Linux. It's also generally a step or two back from Linux in terms of hardware support, although it did have USB support first. I'd suggest FreeBSD for someone...

IN retrospect, doesn't IDE, and the computer HD makers suck?

Some of the raptors are quiet, too. One of my students has four in a desktop PC, in a RAID 10. Two of the drives, purchased retail from a local shop, are quite loud (loud = not unreasonable for a 10,000rpm drive but shocking compared to recent IDE stuff). Two others came from newegg and aren't...

Cable costs can only be better than SCSI. Particularly for you Grantie Digital fetishists. Even if we're talking about gold-plated GD cables, there are going to be fewer wires. USB2 <> 480Mbps

USB "2.0" seems to be on every new motherboard now. Whether that's Hi-Speed USB is a matter for consideration. Firewire adoption still seems glacial in comparison to USB2 - a year ago USB2 was downright exotic. I'd wager most of the members here don't have it. Where are you seeing new FW...

    USB2 <> 480Mbps

Yup. That's right. USB 2.0 doesn't mean what we think it does. Isn't that funny? Apparently, a manufacturer can claim USB 2.0 compliance with a device that only handles data at the pathetic 12Mbps that "USB 1.1" offers. More here. I was reminded of this because of recent grousing about scanning.
