Video card for mid-range business systems

I'll say it again, and in all seriousness: nvidia's cards run hot. Many need active cooling and are still pretty warm. "Hot" is not a desireable quality in a business system, and I don't see any advantage to 'l33t Quake framerates for word and excel users. I'll admit I'm not the person most...

Video card for mid-range business systems

I know you don't want to hear it. Too bad. ATI 7x00. I like "actual ATI" better than the OEM stuff, but at $40-ish for a 64MB, DDR Radeon 7200, with 3dfx-good 2D quality and 3D that's up to snuff for everything that's out right now, they're a marvelous buy. I think part of my beef with nvidia...

    Which Socket A?

Having recently visited spacewalker.com, I wouldn't go handing brains out to Shuttle too quickly, either. Anyway, you and I (and Buck and Coug and time and heck, most everyone else who visits here, too) have been building PCs long enough to know that pin layouts aren't standard and probably...

    Decent Fans

Ended up buying a small assortment of fans from newegg, including a thermaltake volcano unit, a YS Tech, and a large, low-rpm unit from a company I've never heard of, Speeze.

    Decent Fans

Simple question: What's a decent HSF combo in the $10 - $20 range for an AMD chip? Mostly I buy retail chips, and when I don't, I pick up $7 Cooler Master combos. So what's better?

I have to say, Tannin, that I don't see where you're coming from on Gigabyte's manuals. I think the docs I've gotten with my boards has been pretty good. The installation poster has everything an experienced tech needs to know to set up the board, plus the case sticker with the layout if you...

I've got two of the big board running here - the AXP - and I can tell you that the fan at least initially is quiet. The KT333-based RXx had a good heat sink. Man, I wish I could buy good aftermarket northbridge heatsinks.

    Which Socket A?

I heart gigabyte. Great docs. Sensible setup - I like the markings on the LED pins and the color-coded connectors. I like that I can choose CPU plug and play or set it with DIP switches. Dual BIOS is a good thing as is standard USB2 on their products. Just a good deal all around.

    Which Socket A?

Yes, I tried that on the first two. The third was current when I got it back (good user!), the forth was using the stock rev1 BIOS (dated Sept. 2001) but by that time I was tired of dealing with it. My guess is Epox sent out a batch of boards with bad fuses on the keyboard port, but I really...

I've had issue with Epox over the last few months. In four months I had four boards (8KHA+ and 8KHAL) all lose the PS/2 keyboard. Anybody else have that problem, ever? I sold 21 systems with Epox boards in the last year, and those are the only problems I've had. It's just odd that it was the...

    "Fleet computer challenge"

I'm going to build a machine I can stand behind. After long thought, I don't think that's a $350 computer. Besides, when I say $600, I've got some room to work down. ;) I know *my* $600 computer is going to kick the crap out of Dell's or HP's.

I work for a training company, not a community college. And yes, I've brought up the same concerns regarding notebooks. Also the fact that I don't want to maintain a bunch of them. I don't think they're worth the money in this case, and "loss prevention" isn't in my job description. The one...

My current proposal is to eliminate a lab of computers. That drops us down to 48 machines that need upgrades and gets me into the right budgetary ballpark. Doom 3: Beautiful

Posts on slashdot also indicate that the alpha hardware requirements are a little bit insane. 10 - 15 fps on an ATI 7500, low detail, around 20 on an 8500 or a GF4 4200 with some of the details turned on/up. 1 fps on a GF2 MX. Some are asserting that RAM needs to be up over 512MB, too. Ouch.

    which printer?

They're more like $1 or $1.50 if you know where to buy them. I like HP Inkjets. Almost entirely because of the fact their printers keep paper horizontal, which I think is a much better mechanism than the top-feeders. Since HP is the only company that does things that way, they get my inkjet budget.

There's no shame in being a console kind of guy, James. I am, too. I also spend far more time in console apps than I do using X. If you've got local access to all the source code, one really cool benchmark for your *BSD machine is doing a 'make world'. It's kind of pathetic on my HP715 but...

Most HX boards didn't have the voltage circuits to handle an MMX chip, although HX did support up to 8 SIMM slots. The FIC 2012 is a very good Socket7 board. Just noticed that Ghost v2003 supports writing (saved) images directly to NTFS-formatted drives. Symantec may be a crappy company in all other ways but that's really frickin' cool for a DOS program. Especially since it also does firewire, USB1.1 and 2, and CD/DVD-R/W out of the box, too.

Use a Linux install CD, and its fdisk, and all you have to do is change the partition number. You can exit the install at any time after that. You could also use one of the disk manufacturer's easy setup utilities to fix it, I think.
