    Coolest Magazine ever

OK. My father gave me about five years worth of back issues of this magazine about six months ago, and they've been piled in the back of my car ever since. Until today. An exceptionally long line at the drive-through window at Taco Bell had me ready to KILL for something to read. I vaguely...

Hardware innovations you'd like to see become mainstream

Upgrading to ACPI on 2000/XP isn't that bad. You start the install, and at the point where you reboot the first time, you switch on ACPI, then allow the upgrade to continue.

    Biggest nVidia scam yet

Just thought I'd say that I had NOTHING to do with this rant. Just to be the voice of reason.... is gainward the only company selling SDRam GF4MXs? I'd rather hang one company than a chipset manufacturer...

    My first Linux box(any suggestions)

XP wants a level of encryption in authenticating connections to file shares. Some of these things can be fixed by prodding local security policy on XP, some by recompiling samba with additional support for encryption. Neither I nor James has found a way to make it "just work" like it does with...

Old news - VIA KT400A confirmed

I have couple of problems with nforce. One is that it's made by nvidia, a company whose products I firmly - and with good reason - believe are inferior. The second is that as a chipset, it hasn't been widely adopted by companies whose products I would actually buy (i.e. Gigabyte doesn't do it...

Old news - VIA KT400A confirmed

Yeah. Inexpensive stability sucks. At the $5 a KT333 with USB2 support costs over the price of KT266A? That's not worth a damn thing! nforce2 is a niche board. The high-end audio is cool, but mostly I don't see it as delivering real value to a customer. If I tell someone they can pay $10 more...

Samsung or current-gen Maxtor drives (only in red boxes). I heart my warranty. I don't know what I'll do if Samsung drops to 1 year warranty. Cry, I guess. BTW, Clocker, more RAM is always good. You know that without me having to tell you. :)

    802.11A or G?

802.11B and G at least are "shared media". There's 11 or 54Mbit to share no matter how many clients are using that particular AP. So I guess that would be "hub like".
  10. Mercutio

    802.11A or G?

Took the AP back to the store, got a different one. Things now work MUCH better. 80%+ signal strength in my whole apartment. Since the physical installation didn't change, I guess maybe there was an antenna issue? 54Mbit is almost tolerable for file copying, too. ;)

    WD400JB Just Died

For a casual user I doubt it would be much of an improvement. I'd also like to say that I've RMA'd 5 of the 11 WD drives I've purchased for myself in the last 18 months, a mix of AB, BB, and JB drives. That's NOT a good track record.

My AP is set on a wall about 4 inches from the ceiling. Yup, 802.11G still has crappy encryption.

    802.11A or G?

Yes Jan, I do. I turned it off before I even plugged my AP in. At this point I think my neighbors' cordless phones might be the problem. I got up at 4:00 and tried again, and things seemed to work a bit better.

    802.11A or G?

In my life as a consultant I run into 802.11B equipment with something like annoying frequency. It's downright common, truth be told. In the US, when we hear about cold weather, the termperature is reported at either International Fall, Minnesota or Buffalo, New York. Toronto is 50-something miles north of Buffalo. Now, this could still be part of the whole "It snowed on the East Coast and we're all a bunch of pansies"...
