Customized Epox 8KHA+ Motherboard $55 Shipped USA

Actually I was thinking about getting her a 3/4 scale Harley. I know someone selling one. She drools every time she sees them on the road. Except that she hasn't been very nice to me the last couple weeks... Do you think she'd learn to like the beautiful 8KHA+ as much as she likes those bikes?

    Adding drive to raid-5 array

IBM's array manager made me re-initialize the array when I went from a 4-drive to a 10-drive RAID5 on my setup. Had to do a full backup, change the array, then restore. Or it's possible that I didn't do things right, I suppose. It isn't like I add drives to established RAIDs all the time...

Customized Epox 8KHA+ Motherboard $55 Shipped USA

On the other hand, $55 is a steal for a quality KT266A part. Everything decent is at least $80 new. Note that being decent is clearly the same as not being ECS. I'm sure that board is in prime condition. My only concern at the moment has to do with the fact that Amy's birthday is in two weeks...

Customized Epox 8KHA+ Motherboard $55 Shipped USA

Honestly it's only a big deal for a narrow range of applications. Mostly you aren't going to notice. I was thinking about upgrading a machine from a KT133A to the Epox Clocker is selling. A difference I might not notice, either.

    Stupid question

Rotund One? Like you'd know, Ms. Sock Puppet. :P My tax is easy: It's 5%. That's it. Thank goodness. It's all about costs, though. Having that low-cost machine is a great way to get sales. So many people won't ever do what even the little duron can handle.

    Stupid question

You'd think parts would be cheaper, what with Oz being so close to all those southeast asian manufacturing companies... That's close to $800. Almost twice as much (2/3rds more, anyway). That's just insane.

    Stupid question

I only sell two systems, but it's amazing how similar the "budget" machine Tannin describes is to mine, and how similar his best-seller is to my upper-end machine (although I use a gigabyte board for that one). My low-end unit is $425 right now ($475 with a Windows 98 license)... how much is...

That's how I got that link to anandtech... I knew it was something like that. Jason can be a lousy, unethical businessman. It doesn't particularly change my opinion of him (take that as you will).

Intel i960 single channel, AMI, Perc/2, raid cards? Any good

Ultra2 Wide. i960 is an awfully slow CPU for a RAID card at this point. You really want a high-end card with a StrongARM if you can find one. ICP Vortex cards are nice. Look for one of those.

    Enjoy putting the boot in?

Really, I meant what I said about Jason's former customers staying around, too. The ones that weren't Tea (don't crap where you eat. Remember that), I mean. SR needs clueful people. SF needs them, too. Either way. Jason's buddies claim to be IT pros? Fine. We should make them welcome and value...

    Enjoy putting the boot in?

They're cheap, alright. Decent enough hard disks. Displays that in and of themselves aren't bad. But criminally bad chassis and keyboards. They overheat, too. Give them a few months and let me know what you think.
  14. Mercutio

    Enjoy putting the boot in?

As I think about it, the first problem I have with that thread is its title. Jason and "IT pro" don't go together in the same sentence (except just now). Looking at what's happening on SR right now, I really do feel something should be done. My response as a moderator would simply be to lock...

I dimly recall seeing some nasty stuff about Knight Technology on anand's forums last year. It's possible that there are actually more people with complaints. Finding cable that's up to snuff for gigabit is really, really hard. Sure, most anything "premium" you buy will say Cat5e or even "cat6" (not actually a standard yet). Good low-cost speakers

I've never had a problem like this. My history, however. Historically, I bought cheapies. You know, the $5 unbranded sort. No problems there, and anyone who cared went out and bought their own. I still use those sorts for my lowest of the low cost builds. Starting about the time MP3s became...

    External EIDE RAID from Promise

Too bad there isn't mention of cost. I'm guessing $250 without drives, $300 or so suggested retail. Too much for a SCSI enclosure and a bridge. If the price is right, though, I'd have no problem picking one or two up.

    Good low-cost speakers

I have a bit of a problem. Namely, the speakers I've been shipping out with PC builds keep failing. Annoyingly, they aren't the $6 speakers one expects to break, but $20 ones that cost just enough that there's some expectation of quality, and just little enough that the company's support people...

    Monitor strangeness

My rule of thumb is 4 - 5 years for a 17" display. 14" displays usually don't age very gracefully at all; after three years or so, there is a really noticeable deterioration. I've not had a 21" monitor for long enough to really tell, but 21" displays tend to be overspecified anyway. I'd expect...

MP3 is a bad choice. It's a compressed, lossy format, after all. I can hear the difference between MP3 and CD Audio with only slight problem. The other problem that's presented is volume gain.
