Mini-review: Iomega USB/Firewire external hard disk

What a cute little toy! Product is a sealed enclosure with a 3.5" hard disk inside. It supports both firewire and USB2 through a proprietary cable interface on the drive. I installed the drive in its USB2 configuration on a P4-1500 with an NEC-based PCI USB2 controller. I'm fairly used to USB2...

MMmmmm.. port aggregation. obyogyahog....<drool> I'm gonna throw it in my fileserver at work, actually (win2ks... and this is what's stunning to me: It's a "server" in that it's in a 4U rackmount enclosure with a highpoint PCI controller for its two "big disks"... but it's also an AthlonXP on...

DM+9 review finally up at SR

Maxtor hasn't ever really been cozy with SR. WD has. Just something to keep in mind. At least I have since I heard that there was some exploration along those lines. On the other side of things, Eugene had to in essence do 3 sets of testing for this review, so I guess that mitigates things a...

Old news - VIA KT400A confirmed

I buy only Via motherboards, in an almost unbroken streak since the last BX board I purchased in, oh, early 2000. I've picked up a couple of AMD 751s (would've bought more but the price was never right) and a pair of SiS735s, but it's Via for me other than that. Historically, I've found SiS to...

    Mini-review: Sapphire Radeon 9000 VIVO

I've installed a couple of TV Wonders. Haven't seen one in awhile but I'll swear up and down it's MPEG-2 only. I do timer recordings and such with the MMC software. I can use a VCR's timer to turn on if I need to, but if I'm recording off the VCR, I'm almost always going to be putting a tape...

    Mini-review: Sapphire Radeon 9000 VIVO

ATI-ish VIVO cards have Svideo in and out, and composite in and out. ATI's tuners suck in ways you cannot imagine, at least from an antenna source (don't have cable). The difference between a VIVO and an AIW is the antenna input, which frankly leaves me limp. I hook my VIVO cards up to a VCR...

Any decent priced NAS units for home users?

First of all, that machine is a rebadged Quantum Snap! server. That's the good news. The other good news is that it's in that sweet little 1U enclosure. ...but, did you look at those warranty terms? I'm not amused by that at all. Remember that like I said before, you're paying for a PC running...

    Biggest nVidia scam yet

I always use Via chipsets. I almost always use ATI cards. HOWEVER: my negative experiences are by and large from computers I did not build. I've seen Dells with crappy nvidia cards in them, HP machines, beigeboxes with PC Chips boards... I don't see any commonality there. If nothing else...

    Coolest Magazine ever

OK. My father gave me about five years worth of back issues of this magazine about six months ago, and they've been piled in the back of my car ever since. Until today. An exceptionally long line at the drive-through window at Taco Bell had me ready to KILL for something to read. I vaguely...

Hardware innovations you'd like to see become mainstream

Upgrading to ACPI on 2000/XP isn't that bad. You start the install, and at the point where you reboot the first time, you switch on ACPI, then allow the upgrade to continue.

    My first Linux box(any suggestions)

XP wants a level of encryption in authenticating connections to file shares. Some of these things can be fixed by prodding local security policy on XP, some by recompiling samba with additional support for encryption. Neither I nor James has found a way to make it "just work" like it does with...

Old news - VIA KT400A confirmed

I have couple of problems with nforce. One is that it's made by nvidia, a company whose products I firmly - and with good reason - believe are inferior. The second is that as a chipset, it hasn't been widely adopted by companies whose products I would actually buy (i.e. Gigabyte doesn't do it...

Old news - VIA KT400A confirmed

Yeah. Inexpensive stability sucks. At the $5 a KT333 with USB2 support costs over the price of KT266A? That's not worth a damn thing! nforce2 is a niche board. The high-end audio is cool, but mostly I don't see it as delivering real value to a customer. If I tell someone they can pay $10 more...

    802.11A or G?

802.11B and G at least are "shared media". There's 11 or 54Mbit to share no matter how many clients are using that particular AP. So I guess that would be "hub like".
  25. Mercutio

    802.11A or G?

Took the AP back to the store, got a different one. Things now work MUCH better. 80%+ signal strength in my whole apartment. Since the physical installation didn't change, I guess maybe there was an antenna issue? 54Mbit is almost tolerable for file copying, too. ;)

    WD400JB Just Died

For a casual user I doubt it would be much of an improvement. I'd also like to say that I've RMA'd 5 of the 11 WD drives I've purchased for myself in the last 18 months, a mix of AB, BB, and JB drives. That's NOT a good track record.

Yes Jan, I do. I turned it off before I even plugged my AP in. At this point I think my neighbors' cordless phones might be the problem. I got up at 4:00 and tried again, and things seemed to work a bit better.

In my life as a consultant I run into 802.11B equipment with something like annoying frequency. It's downright common, truth be told. In the US, when we hear about cold weather, the termperature is reported at either International Fall, Minnesota or Buffalo, New York. Toronto is 50-something miles north of Buffalo. Now, this could still be part of the whole "It snowed on the East Coast and we're all a bunch of pansies"...
