Which room? My listen-only setup is an Onkyo 696 with Acoustic Research speakers (ARO-216s and ARO-208s, don't remember the center) and a little yamaha sub. It's hooked to a JVC 7-disc DVD-A changer and a Sony 400 disc CD changer that I absolutely despise (it won't read some discs new, out of...

    How to start programming

Take four years of CS classes. You'll spend about two and a half of them spinning your wheels trying to figure things out and then <poof> suddenly things will sink in. No? OK. Everything I can think of is either deeply academic ("The Art of Computer Programming") or very task oriented ("Learn...

    PC sound system

Not too long ago, Cambridge Soundworks was a respected mid-range speaker manufacturer. In fact, I get their catalog, and they still make some reasonably nice speakers in the $2000/speaker range. The thing is, Creative bought CSW to legitimize itself as a "home theater" brand, and now their low...

    Sometimes the phone rings ...

I suppose someone on dialup might not want to grab the whole darn thing... at least, that the best answer I can think of. I think I might've charged for a service call to go out and deliver a burned CD. I run into things like that from time to time. But then, maybe the guy was just a moron.

    Just a reminder

Without knowing for sure, I'd guess Spaf was slamming Linux in favor of a more organized development by a team of system programmers with a real design document and clearly defined roles. This is the model favored by *BSD and all commercial operating systems and was a primary resistance to Linux...

    Just a reminder

Spaf was theoretically one of my professors at Purdue. He literally wrote the book on Internet Security. The first one. I'm not kidding. He's an old Unix hand at a school where CS students don't touch Windows machines at all. If he says something isn't right security-wise, it isn't.

What timwhit said is essentially true... AC3 is the current encoding format for "Dolby Digital". There have been other encoding standards in the past (used in movie theaters). There may be other "Dolby Digital" standards in the future, such as an official "7.1" format. Your other options are...

Looking at the feature list for RH8, it looks like the two killer features (to me) are the unified desktop GUI and simplified font management. RedHat8's install supposedly is missing a lot of multimedia stuff, though, which probably makes it somewhat less appealing to the mandrake crowd. Galeon...

    Dual monitors in Linux?

Either I've had fantastically poor luck with nvidia products or there's a serious problem with their hardware and/or drivers.
