On the purely hardware side, It depends on how much is dedicated to reads versus writes. If you only use as much for writes as is used currently, then the chance is no greater.

There is no technical reason not ot increase an ATA drives disk cache to 64M or 128M really. If they can write firmware algorithms to take advantage then a highbandwidth interface becomes more important.

I once had to use a MAC. The Win95 PS2s in the IBM lab were all taken. The interface may be intuitive for some but I'd personally rather have an Etch-a-Sketch. Go for Linux. You'll sleep better at night knowing you've compiled every bit of juice out of the machine.

Not necessarily. Let's say Merc starts. He would write something up and then label it as part 1. He then sends it to me. I read it and then send you my part labeled as part 2. At some point I would also send my part to the designated re-assembler who orders the story according to parts and posts...
