    Mandrake 9.0 Released Today

The best legal version you'll find will be a downloadable, bootable ISO that doesn't include an installer... you can try out SuSE on a CD, but if you want it on your hard drive, you have to buy it or steal it.

Competing with Dell and other Indian companies

It's a "multinational" thing. India has a decent education system and they're awake when most of the US is asleep, so they get hired for 24hr call center operations in the US. Somehow it's cheaper to pay an Indian in India to take your call than it is to pay for the international phone calls...

    What's a good photo printer?

In my experience, Lexmark printers break if you even so much as look at them funny. Lexmark is the Kia of printer companies. I can't even imagine Dell doing well with their printers.

Nope. It's billg6969@msn.com. Or maybe whgates666@microsoft.com. I'm pretty sure it's one of those two.

    Northwest US rendezvous!?

I've never been on a plane, myself. Everywhere I've wanted to go, I've gotten in a car. My father, however, complains about air quality nonstop any time he has to go to Houston. He's got a set of pictures he took from one flight demonstrating the green air phenomenon.

Mark, if you can actually identify a new, quality inkjet printer, I know that all the rest of us would love to know about it.

Gary, look out the window of an airplane next time you land in Houston. You'll see, as you descend, the air gradually change color.

    Update to RH 7.3

RedHat upgrades are fairly notorious for doing that, in fact. And redhat's x.0 releases are usually a bit buggy, too. .2s and .3s are much better places to be if you can't handle all the package management on your own.

    Leadtek mainboards - good?

Premium for a new product. The GA7VAXP has only been on the market for around a month. My only negative from using one is that the damn thing has a fan on the northbridge. Granted, it's a nice-looking fan, but I'd rather have the heatsink the GA7VRXx used. :(

    Leadtek mainboards - good?

The guy I buy cases from swears up and down that Shuttle AK31s are a solid product. At $56 a pop, they certainly qualify for "budget" status. Asus makes a cheap board?

    Doom 3: Beautiful

What I really want is DoomI/II remade. From what I understand, DoomIII is more of a Thief/System Shock-type game, with only one or two bad guys on the screen at a time. That, frankly, leaves me limp. I want the occasional roomful of badguys. The "psychogical" hook will work for a little while...

    Mozilla.org releases Phoenix 0.1

Yup. It has different buttons. It loads a bit faster. UI speed is a bit better. It's zippy like mozilla in all mozilla's usual ways. Still, for my light mozilla-based browsing needs, I like Kmeleon. I *DO* like the default browser action for non keywords in the location bar (Search Google for...)

I think our house was networked in 1990... My father is such a technophile that, growing up, I didn't even realize how much I knew about computers. I mean, I *really* didn't know how much I knew about them. I mean, I was fixing PCs in high school, since grown-ups paid me usually $20/hour to...

Home Depot works really well for quick purchases but I can ususally find thnigs cheaper online. Except for Cat5. Home Depot is absolutely the place to buy Cat5. Menards (but not HD) also sells a $100, wall-mount 4U rack in their telco wiring section. Never bought one, but it's still cool to see. :)

    Lycoris

Lycoris is what was once known as Corel Linux. It's based on Debian, has an exceedingly nice-looking desktop (including all the standard Windows-ish icons), and has a decent buzz from the Linux community. I expect it'll be a niche player for at least a while as a good choice for resellers...

Any way to get QEMM 9.0 to recognize over 256 MB of RAM?

My philosophy is basically that, when I'm trying to get work done, it's usually less of a hassle on my linux boxes than on Windows. I get less weirdo errors, and once everything is configured the way I want it, I don't have to do any of the "fighting" I sometimes wind up doing on a Windows...

Try www.cableconn.com. Since you're fairly new to networking, I'd also recommend that you head over to blackbox.com and request a catalog. I wouldn't buy anything from them - their stuff isn't cheap, but their catalog is a good enough instrument that my applied datacomm class used it for a...

    Best TIVO-Type Unit

ReplayTV doesn't require a service contract to use most of its features, unlike the Tivo. I know the subscription charges for Tivo can be bypassed somehow, but I don't know whether that works in the US or not. I'd buy whatever offered the most recording time, myself.

Yes, and I got a fantastic deal on the crayons, too. Photo output is very, very nice, but frankly, Epson photo printers on Epson photo paper is better still. Of course, my Phaser doesn't even pause when I tell it to print a photo, unlike that inkjet.

My Phaser 850DP cost about $400 to fill with, uh, crayons. The color is utterly unreal on plain paper, but not much better on photo paper. Inkjets rule on DPI anyway. There was an article on /. a couple months ago on continuous ink systems for inkjets. I guess it makes their ink actually...

Don't forget cost per page Last I checked, the cost-per-page of inkjet photo printers + premium photo paper + fade-resistant ink was something like double the cost of taking a CF card to a photoprocessor (here in the US, drug stores like Walgreens) and letting them do the work.
