RAID Gear:
  • 8 x Samsung Spinpoint F3EG HD203WI 2.0TB 5400 RPM 32MB cache
  • Dell PERC 6/i PCI-E x8 SAS RAID controller with 256MB cache & battery
  • 2 x 32pin SAS to 4 SATA cables
The array is a single RAID-6 volume with a 512k size stripe. I got all the drives installed in the case last night and the array initialized over night. Now I'm running my imitation ATTO test using IOmeter. I'll post the results later today when it's finished.

Okay, here's the first benchmark.

8 x 2.0TB PERC 6/i RAID-6 Array IOmeter benchmark (ATTO imitation):

For comparison a PERC 6/i card in a similar dual core PC with 8 x Samsung Spinpoint F2EG HD154UI 1.5TB 5400 RPM 32MB cache drives instead.

8 x 1.5TB PERC 6/i RAID-6 Array IOmeter benchmark (ATTO imitation):

I have no idea why the reads are so much better for small block sizes with the 2.0TB F3EG drives than it was for the 1.5TB F2EG drives.

I like it, I have half a mind to take my home server in this direction.

I retested with Read Ahead caching disabled.

So I finally deployed this 8 x 2.0TB RAID-6 array in my primary server over the weekend. The older 8 x 1.5TB / PERC 6i RAID-6 array I had been using is now in my new nightly backup server. Copying multiple TB of data over gigabit ethernet at ~68MB/sec (between two Windows XP Pro x64 systems) isn't exactly a fast operation.

FWIW, I also just noticed the typo in the thread title. it should be 2.0TB, not 2.0GB.
