Animating pictures

I've never done this before, and am looking for any tips.

I've shot several sequences (4-12 frames) that I felt would go well as a series. What would be the recommended technique and output? Does animated GIF support a decent resolution? Would making some kind of video file require additional software or blow the file size out of proportion?

Should I just give up and go back to framing them side-by-side?

GIF will support any resolution, but is limited to just 256 colours...

Could always try APNG (Animated PNG)?

If you are going to put these on a web page how about JPG or PNG with some jQuery to provide your animation.
