My brother-in-law who is a police officer sent me a PPT file with information about ATM card thefts.

I did a quick conversion to html using PPT to share with you guys. Good info.

Pictures don't look right unless you view the page with MSIE. Be aware while you are at the ATM!

Thanks Kevin, that was a good presentation...surprising how effective a simple trap method such as that can be ...(if ever there was an appropriate time for the label, now would be perfect to coin it as being nothing more then "ghetto") .... unfortunately, its probably as equally surprising as to how many chumps there are that would voluntarily surrender their PIN .... without having a gun placed to their head ... so I guess the crooks are really just leveraging common knowledge -- it takes two to tango.

First thing I thought was that no one would be getting my pin if they tried to help me with a stuck card. Sucks that guy got reeled into the scam.

Well, that is intersting, but the ATM I frequent has an open channel design like a gas station pump, where the card goes in only partway. That trap would not work in such a case because the user is always gripping the card.

The ATMs by me don't suck the card in to read it so this scam just wouldn't work. I'd probably notice and remove the X-ray film anyway. In fact, if someone ever tried to pull this scam, I might well play along, and then take out the film and card just when they think they've got me.

Ideally it might sound good to confront them by pulling out the x-ray film, but doing so might be like trapping a cat in a corner. You don't want to be there when the cat gets mad.

They had a special on ATM dodgyness in Australia a couple of years ago. They mounted a small card reader on to a sign "Clean your ATM card here", located just before the actual ATM. Hidden camera caught a bunch of people swiping thru, unaware that they had just given the bad guy all their card contents.

They also investigated how easy it was to own your own ATM, total lack of background checking etc, as long as you had money in an account to cover the cash in the ATM you were all set for major fraud.
