There's a new version of Avast today and the default appearance no longer looks like a goofy car stereo.

I haven't been prompted so not mandatory. I did see the little window come up today with an update so it is checking and updating the db.

Yes, I agree. Is the program version update mandatory to receive iAVS updates?

Probably not for a while. They're claiming lower resource utilization and faster scanning speed. I don't actually use Avast on any of my personal machines so I can't tell if that's real or not, but it's certainly a good thing if they aren't exaggerating.

Microsoft Security Essentials does seem to work well on Windows 7, though to my slight aggravation it keeps flagging url2file.exe, a command line program I use in a lot of little scripts for client setup. I need to change my workflow so I do all the scripts before I install antivirus software, I guess.

Thanks. I don't want to bother dealing with differences or reconfiguration from 1300 miles away if 4.8 still updates the defs automatically. ;)
