Best TIVO-Type Unit

I need to get a TIVO type digital recorder so I can watch so shows I will be missing during school and stuff. I don't know anything about these things....which one do you think is the best for the buck?

Buying a TiVo.

ReplayTV doesn't require a service contract to use most of its features, unlike the Tivo. I know the subscription charges for Tivo can be bypassed somehow, but I don't know whether that works in the US or not.

I'd buy whatever offered the most recording time, myself.
