BIOS setting wrong CPU speed

I just upgraded an (OEM) AthlonXP 1600+ to a (retail) 2400+, both are 266FSB chips. My motherboard (Gigabyte GA-7VRX rev2.0), however reports the chip as an 1800+ when the system clock in the BIOS is set to "By Hardware", that is, default/not overclocked. The latest BIOSes, (F6 and onwards -- I have F7) supposedly address a problem this mobo had recognizing the 2400 and 2600 T-Breds.
I tried flashing the BIOS with the version that I already have but that changed nothing.
Would clearing the CMOS help?
Any other ideas?

Here's what CPUID has to say on the matter:

Never mind.
There's a DIP switch (!) on the motherboard that selects between 100MHz and 133MHz FSB. Flipped it the other way and - viola! - 2400+.
Who still uses DIP switches to set FSB and multiplier? Yeesh!
(ah, well, better than jumpers)

Ditto, ditto and ditto! :)

Gigabyte product is not perfect - it's just by far the best we've got.

As the website says, "GIGA-BYTE is the only motherboard manufacturer to win the Taiwan Symbol of Excellence for SEVEN consecutive years.".

So I'm reluctant to throw too many stones at said company. I've become obsessed by overall quality lately, and I think Gigabyte's current offerings are the standouts of a somewhat indifferent bunch.

I need to believe in something, dammit ...

Depending on what revision of which R/AXP board you get, there will be one or two DIP switches to switch between 100, 133 and 166MHz operation. It's pretty clearly indicated in both the manual and the setup poster that comes with the board.

One of the things I really like about gigabyte boards is the fact that there ARE DIP switches to set CPU speed. They keep customers from doing stupid things like overclocking the machines I've sold them.

Switches are best. Set it right once and once only, never have to worry about it ever again. I never trust software, even when it's firmware.

I agree (she's a smart little orangutan).

But I'm a big orangutan, Buck. I might be only four feet and an undisclosed quantity of inches tall, but (at last count) my width was most conveniently measured in yards. :(

No matter. My new food-free diet is working. Another month or two and I'll be a nice slim circular shape again.

BTW, I am also a big Gigabyte fan. (I take it no-one minds if I post on-topic for a moment?) The one thing I have against Gigabyte boards at present is that they come bundled with Norton Anti-virus, which is competent but cumbersome and results in us getting a lot of support issues to deal with mostly to do with geting the damn thing registered and updated properly. Our other current boards (Mostly Epox and Albatron, also some Asrocks which are competent but mega-clunky) all bundle PC-Cillan instead - which is practically trouble-free and vastly superior.

30-day free trial of NOD32 and then the customer can purchase a 1-year subscription if they like. That is usually the route that I take. Of course, that is limited to the systems I build. If they buy the board and install things themselves, they usually install every bit of software that came with any piece of hardware they've purchased within that past two years.
