Black and White Video?

I just noticed something kind of strange.
The PC I'm sitting at right now is only displaying video files in black and white (like TV, not like halftones).
Color is normal - 32 bit, 1152x864 - and everything else displays fine.

But in Virtualdub, PowerDVD, Media Player (10), Media Player Classic, Winamp 5, WinDVD Creator, Ulead Moviefactory and DVD Shrink, every video I've tried has not had color. The same files look fine on other PCs.

Graphedit shows normal graphs for everything, too.

I just spent 20 minutes uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, video codecs and display applications. This is an XP machine.

Anyone ever heard of anything like this before?

Well, OK. It was a strange thing and I don't know how it got changed, but I did figure it out.

In Catalyst Control Center the saturation control under the video settings was turned all the way down. Obviously not a thing I would've looked at.
And not only that, you can't change any of the controls unless a video is actually playing. I pronounce that officially retarded.

Now the question is, why the hell did that happen?

I'm guessing there are three possibilities:

1. Someone else (person or animal) in the house is knowledgeable enough to change that setting.

2. After too much chocolate milk, you fell into a cocoa high, unconsciously changing things around the house, including the saturation setting in Catalyst.

3. Some other piece of software (be it malicious or not) changed that setting for some unknown reason.

I'm leaning towards number two.

Have you installed the latest drivers? If not, don't. If you did, remove them.
Recently I installed the ATI 5.4 drivers and found they screwed up a lot of video affects.
Trying to scroll with the wheel resulted in a stop action mode of screen changes. Video hardware acceleration was turned down to minimum. In general they made a mess. I used XPs 'rollback' feature to repair the bad drivers install.

I'm encountered this as well, what a mess. I wonder if the Omega Driver has these glitches worked out.
