Defragmentation

What program is best for defragmenting speed? It has been a while since I tried any new software, but 80% full 1TB drives are killing me. Thanks.

I just used the Server 2003 defragger to chew through an ~92% full 4TB array in about 8 hours. Am I silly in considering that good?

I haven't looked at 3rd party defraggers in a long time, but last I checked O&O was the one to have.

I downloaded O&O version 10, but it only sees 5 logical drives. Is that because it is the trial version or some other issue?

That I don't know. I haven't tried it in years, and I only have 2 logical drives

It looks like the O&O only sees certain controllers (mainly the ICH) and not other popular PCIe ones, yet also sees some virtual drives. It is stupid, really.

I've been using PerfectDisk for some years.

There's nothing wrong with the defragmenter that comes with Windows, except that it's a bit manual and awfully dumb. Beyond that, it does the job reasonably and costs nothing extra.

PerfectDisk, like all of the other options, is considerably slicker and has more bells and whistles. I like to set it defragment while the computer is idle. While it never really finishes, it's always getting better.

Vista's defragger is totally automatic. Upon OS installation it schedules itself & runs silently every few days in the background. Can't say if it's still dumb, though I'd imagine it is. Other than the scheduling there are no options to set.

I've been using O&O since version 3 or 4. No complaints.

As I recall, the defragmenter has always been able to be scheduled. Vista just has one for by default.

It probably took two committees of developers to determine to do that....

You were talking about it being "a bit manual" and I was just pointing out that it is now automatic.

Actually, win2k couldn't schedule a defrag with the built in tools(defrag and task scheduler). XP was the first that could do it natively.
